Summary
A lightweight corded 5-inch random orbital sander with a 2.8 amp motor, a variable speed dial up to 13,000 OPM and an onboard cyclonic dust box. It suits light DIY and finish work; budget for a shop vac, because owners repeatedly report the dust canister will not stay attached.
Strengths
- A 2.8 amp motor and a variable speed dial that runs from 7,000 to 13,000 OPM.
- Compact 3.44 lb body that handles tight spots and one-handed work.
- Cyclonic dust box, dust-sealed switch and hook-and-loop pad all included at a budget price.
- Pro Tool Reviews picked it for DIYers in 2025, citing power, variable speed and price.
- mybest tested 11 sanders and put it among the two corded models with both a speed dial and more than 2.8 amps.
- 1-year limited warranty.
Weaknesses
- Owners repeatedly report the dust canister will not stay attached, or falls apart on first use.
- The X-Flow canister alone collects poorly, and no shop-vac adapter is included.
- The 2.7 mm orbit removes stock more slowly than sanders with larger orbits.
- The hook-and-loop pad can wear down at the edges (Lowe’s Q&A).
- One Reddit owner reports it barely sanded at all, though that is a single unverified report.
- Some reviewers note more vibration than higher-end sanders, while other owners call it smooth.

Dust collection
The most common complaint is the onboard X-Flow cyclonic dust box. Walmart reviewers write that it “will not stay attached”, that it “fell apart first time”, and that dust went everywhere; the Lowe’s review summary calls the collection system imperfect and the bin awkward to attach. On Reddit, owners say the bag is garbage and that hooking the sander to a shop vac is much better. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat the attachment as a known annoyance rather than a defect. A shop vac is the practical fix, and the standard box has no adapter.
Power, speed and finish
The 2.8 amp universal motor and 2.7 mm orbit make the SR211601 a light-duty tool. Pro Tool Reviews describes a corded design, not the brushless motor some listings claim; the brushless model is the cordless SR7603B. WoodworkingToolsHQ tested it on pine shelves, birch panels and baseboards and called it one of the most well-rounded sanders it tested, while noting more vibration than higher-end tools. The smaller orbit means slower stock removal than sanders with a 4.8 mm orbit, so it suits prep and finishing more than heavy material removal.
Vibration and noise
mybest measured 90.2 dB at maximum speed. Vibration reports split: Pro Tool Reviews and WoodworkingToolsHQ describe more vibration than high-end sanders, while Walmart owners say it holds for hours with very little vibration. That disagreement points to a subjective or unit-specific feel rather than a fixed number.
Price and running costs
SKIL lists the sander at $37.99, ACME Tools at $37.00, mybest at $29.99, Tiger Supplies at $34.99, McCoy’s at $43.53 and Global Industrial at $45.95. Consumables are hook-and-loop 5 in discs, and there is no battery or charger to buy because the tool is corded. A shop-vac connection needs a separate adapter, and the dust canister needs frequent emptying.
Is it worth it?
At $37 or less the SR211601 is a strong buy for light DIY and finish work; between $38 and $45 it is fair, and above that the value is weak unless the compact size is the point. The tradeoffs are the small orbit, the dust collection and the 1-year warranty, which is shorter than the 3-year warranty on the DEWALT DCW210B. Lowe’s has delisted the sander, so check availability before you commit. For heavy stock removal or professional duty, compare with the DEWALT DWE6423 (3 A, 8,000-12,000 OPM).
