Summary
A 30g, 8.6mm-thin Wear OS smartwatch with a bright 1.34-inch display and a deep health sensor suite, aimed at Android users already in Samsung’s ecosystem. Check the battery before you buy: expect a day of use, not the two days the spec sheet implies.
Strengths
- Light at 30g and 8.6mm thick, so it stays comfortable overnight and through a full day.
- The 3,000-nit Super AMOLED screen is the brightest on any standard Galaxy Watch.
- The sensor suite is deep: ECG, heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, body composition and sleep apnea detection.
- Heart-rate tracking stayed within 5 bpm of an Apple Watch Ultra 2 in testing.
- Dual-band GPS tracked runs and walks precisely, fixing the odd discrepancies owners saw on the Watch 7.
- Google Gemini runs on the wrist, and battery life can stretch to about 39 hours with the always-on display off.
Weaknesses
- Samsung rates the 325 mAh battery at up to 30 hours with always-on display, but testing measured 26 hours.
- Owners on r/GalaxyWatch report charging daily and getting less than 24 hours of use.
- The Dynamic Lug System uses proprietary adapters, so third-party straps are limited and may not lock securely.
- Full health and AI features need a Samsung Galaxy phone; other Android phones get a reduced set.
- Some owners on Samsung’s forums report wrist-detection problems that interfere with payments.
- The squared-off body is an acquired taste and can make the screen look smaller than it is.

Battery life
Samsung rates the 325 mAh battery at up to 30 hours with the always-on display on and up to 40 hours with it off. Independent testing measured 26 hours with the display always on and 39 hours with it off, and CNET averaged about 30 hours with every feature running. Owners are blunter: on r/GalaxyWatch many report charging daily and getting less than 24 hours. A recharge from 5% to full took about 64 minutes in testing, and the watch charges wirelessly at 10W. This is the catch that matters most, and it is consistent across reviews and owner threads.
Bands and straps
The 20mm band uses Samsung’s Dynamic Lug System, a proprietary adapter. Standard 20mm straps can physically fit but may not lock securely, and reviewers found the release buttons fiddly to press. If you like swapping straps, budget for Samsung’s own bands or accept a smaller choice.
Health features and the Samsung phone catch
The watch covers ECG, heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, blood pressure, body composition, an antioxidant index, vascular load and sleep apnea detection. Much of it needs a Samsung Galaxy phone plus the Samsung Health Monitor app, and blood pressure and ECG availability varies by market. Galaxy AI extras such as the running and sleep coaches, the antioxidant index and vascular load tracking also need a Galaxy phone, the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account. Managing the watch takes three apps: Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor. On a non-Samsung Android phone, expect a narrower feature set.
Is it worth it?
At launch in July 2025 the 40mm Bluetooth model was $349.99, $50 more than the Watch 7’s $299.99. Samsung’s US store listed it at $299.99 in October 2026 (Samsung US, 2026-10-10). At $250-300 it is a strong buy; at its $349.99 launch price the value is harder to justify given the one-day battery and the same Exynos W1000 chip as the Watch 7. The Watch 8 Classic, with a 46mm case and a rotating bezel, is the step up at $499.
