Summary
Samsung’s 2026 flagship earbuds pair a two-way driver design with strong noise isolation and deep Galaxy phone integration. Check your phone before you buy: the best features, including 24-bit audio and 360 Audio, only work on Samsung Galaxy devices.
Strengths
- Sound quality that reviewers place against AirPods Pro 3 and Sony WF-1000XM6.
- Strong noise isolation: RTINGS calls it superb, and TechGearLab measured 28.9 dB of average reduction.
- Call quality is consistently praised, with effective noise reduction in wind and rain.
- IP57 rating for the earbuds, uncommon in this class.
- Comfortable for long wear: TechGearLab wore them 8.5 hours with no complaints.
- Pinch controls on the stem are easier to use than the old tap controls.
Weaknesses
- Six hours of battery life with ANC on trails the AirPods Pro 3’s eight hours.
- No multipoint Bluetooth, so they cannot stay connected to two non-Galaxy devices at once.
- Many of the best features — 24-bit audio, 360 Audio, head gestures, live translation — require a Samsung Galaxy phone.
- Proprietary ear tips mean no third-party tip swapping without adapters.
- No LDAC or aptX, so non-Samsung phones are limited to AAC or SBC.
- Owners report a bug where ambient mode mutes the caller on calls; the workaround is a pinch-and-hold into noise cancellation.

Sound, fit and calls
The two-way design pairs an 11 mm SuperWide woofer with a 5.5 mm planar tweeter and a dedicated amplifier per driver. Tom’s Guide calls the sound utterly phenomenal and competitive with AirPods Pro 3 and Sony WF-1000XM6, with dynamic bass and no muddiness. CNET hears more clarity and bass extension than the Buds3 Pro, PCMag calls the response clean, crisp and detailed out of the box, and WIRED says the buds get as close to the AirPods Pro as they have seen, in all the best ways.
Noise cancellation is strong, not class-leading. RTINGS calls the isolation superb — chatty coworkers, construction machinery and engines are easily handled — and TechGearLab measured 28.9 dB of average reduction, strongest in bass and treble. CNET says ANC is strong but not quite top tier, a step behind Apple, Bose and Sony; PCMag calls it just average. A SoundGuys comparison via Reddit puts it 5-10 dB behind AirPods Pro 3. Transparency mode splits reviewers: CNET calls it among the best out there, PCMag hears background hiss. Tom’s Guide notes a slight hum of static when ANC is on and no music is playing.
Fit and comfort draw consistent praise. TechGearLab wore them for 8.5 hours with no complaints, and owners report comfort on extended wear. The stem carries a pinch control with swipe volume, which owners find easier than the old tap controls. The transparent case lid attracts fingerprints and the case scratches easily. The ear tips are proprietary, so third-party tips need adapters made for these buds. Some owners report the buds staying connected to the phone while sitting in the closed case, and one owner reports ear fatigue around the four-hour mark.
Call quality is a strength: CNET calls it top-tier with impressive noise reduction, and RTINGS says the microphones handle noise very well in real calls. Samsung Community threads report a real bug: in ambient mode, the other party cannot hear you. One user confirmed it across two separate pairs, and five people reported the problem. The workaround is to pinch and hold to switch to noise cancellation during a call. It is unclear whether firmware has fixed it.
Battery and charging
Samsung rates the buds at up to 6 hours with ANC on and 7 hours with it off, and 26 or 30 hours total with the case. The earbuds carry 61 mAh typical (57 rated) and the case 530 mAh typical (515 rated). RTINGS measured 6 hours of continuous playback with ANC on and called it mediocre; TechGearLab measured 7 hours 45 minutes with ANC off. Five minutes in the case buys an hour of playback, and the case charges wirelessly. The charger and USB-C cable are not in the box.
Galaxy features and compatibility
This is the Buds4 Pro’s home turf and its lock-in. The 24-bit/96 kHz UHQ codec, 360 Audio with head tracking, Super Wideband calling, live translation in 22 languages, head gestures (One UI 8.5 or newer) and auto-switch all require a compatible Galaxy device. UHQ also has to be switched on manually, and SoundGuys notes it uses an upscaling algorithm that needs at least a Galaxy Z Fold5 or newer. The Galaxy Wearable app needs Android 12.0+ with 1.5 GB of memory and is not available on iOS. SoundGuys’ poll found 52% of respondents put off by the exclusive features.
There is no multipoint Bluetooth, so the buds cannot stay connected to two non-Galaxy devices at once, and no LDAC or aptX, so non-Samsung phones are limited to AAC or SBC. Samsung says its SSC codec offers comparable near-lossless audio with better connection stability. The first firmware update, about 8.5 MB, rolled out from April 2026 in South Korea and globally by May, bringing stability fixes only. Samsung announced an FDA-cleared hearing aid feature for Galaxy Buds in August 2026; whether it lands on the Buds4 Pro specifically is unclear.
Is it worth it?
Samsung’s own store lists the Buds4 Pro at $249.99, its launch MSRP; CNET, WIRED and TechGearLab round that to $250. At that price they compete with the AirPods Pro 3 at $249, Sony’s WF-1000XM6 at $329 and Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds Gen 2 at $299. PCMag’s March 2026 review noted a $189 street price, and at that level the value improves substantially, especially for Android buyers who prize sound and ANC over ecosystem features.
For Galaxy phone owners who can use every feature, the Buds4 Pro is easy to recommend at a discount and defensible at MSRP. For other Android users the missing multipoint and locked-away features hurt more. For iOS users the value is lowest: many core features are inaccessible and there is no app. If you are not on Galaxy, treat $189 as the ceiling, not the MSRP.
Which model this is
This page covers the Galaxy Buds4 Pro, model SM-R640N, the successor to the Buds3 Pro, sold in White, Black and Pink Gold (Pink Gold is a Samsung.com exclusive). The US Amazon listing for the black variant is ASIN B0G1PJLWLZ. Do not confuse it with the non-Pro Galaxy Buds4, an open-fit design with a single driver and an IP54 rating, or with the Buds3 Pro.
