Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A feature-dense 75% mechanical keyboard — hot-swappable switches, Bluetooth, a 2.4 GHz dongle, USB-C wired mode, RGB, a 3750 mAh battery and two USB passthrough ports — that makes the most sense for Bluetooth or wired users. Decide whether you truly need the 2.4 GHz dongle first: short range and dropouts are the most consistent complaint across professional tests and owner threads.

Strengths

  • Rare feature density for the money: hot-swap, three connection modes, RGB, USB passthrough and a large battery in one compact board.
  • Keeps arrows, function row and navigation keys in a small footprint.
  • Tom’s Hardware praised the sturdy feel, compact size and multiple Bluetooth profiles.
  • Hot-swap sockets and standard MX-style keycap stems make switch and keycap swaps easy.
  • Battery endurance is a repeated owner positive; Tom’s Hardware ran about a week on Bluetooth without exhausting it.
  • At 803.5 g the plastic chassis feels more planted than most budget boards.

Weaknesses

  • 2.4 GHz range and reliability were the dominant flaw in the professional reviews, and owner reports persist across later revisions.
  • The configuration software is dated and confusing; Tom’s Hardware saw inconsistent profiles and lighting and advised avoiding it unless remapping.
  • No always-visible battery percentage; the review unit signaled charge state through lighting behavior.
  • The USB passthrough is not a hub or charger while the board runs wireless.
  • Tightly packed 75% layout with no numpad.
  • Multi-year owner reports include batteries that stop recharging, repeated keys, LED failures and a loose USB-C fit.

Wireless: the dongle question

The two 2021 independent reviews split on the 2.4 GHz dongle, which is the most useful thing in the research. Tom’s Hardware measured a working range of one to two feet on a desktop and five feet on a laptop, with missed keystrokes beyond that and a further drop once another wireless dongle was active nearby. TechPowerUp, testing the same mode, reported flawless operation with no added latency over wired. Reddit owners describe Tom’s Hardware’s symptom and say moving the dongle onto a USB hub or extension, away from the machine’s other USB ports, fixes it. Bluetooth is the mode both reviewers found reliable, with accurate input at 14–16 feet, and it keeps three device profiles. Treat the dongle as a bonus, not the reason to buy.

Software, firmware and long-term reliability

RK’s software draws recurring complaints about detection, profiles and revision matching, and several owners associate firmware updates with LED failures, though causation is unproven. The installer is unsigned, gets flagged by some antivirus tools, and the version reviewed still carried a 2020 copyright. Repair threads add batteries that test fine externally but refuse to charge through the board, plus keys repeating or dropping after months or years. The fairest reading is inconsistent electronics and firmware quality rather than one catastrophic defect — plenty of multi-year owners report trouble-free use. Keep firmware matched to your exact hardware revision.

Repairs and upkeep

Test a suspect switch by swapping it before blaming the PCB; keycaps and switches pull with the included tool, and spare switches come in the box. The 3750 mAh battery is glued into the case, so it is not a user-replaceable part and no Royal Kludge parts channel for this model was found; the USB-C port, PCB and LEDs are likewise not sold as serviceable modules, so a charging failure is a board-level repair. Note that the passthrough ports go dead in wireless mode and cannot charge the board. Warranty is 1 year on direct purchases, with promotions that have extended it — check the terms for your channel.

Price and value

Royal Kludge’s own store listed the RK84 75% Wireless at $59.99, the wired version from $59.99 against a struck $69.99, and both 2021 independent reviews were written at $79.99. At or below $60 the feature set is good value; $60–$80 is fair and roughly where the reviews sat; above $80 the unresolved 2.4 GHz fault and the glued, non-replaceable battery are hard to justify. Ownership cost is limited to occasional replacement switches and keycaps — there is no battery part to buy, so a failed battery most likely means a new board.

Which model this is

This page covers the Royal Kludge RK84 75% board; the Amazon listing reviewed here is ASIN B08M3KPXV5, the hot-swap Brown-switch tri-mode variant. RK ships several RK84 revisions with different software and firmware packages, so match the download to your exact board before flashing anything.
