Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A rechargeable round-head brush with five modes, a three-state Smart Pressure Sensor and Bluetooth app coaching, and the cheapest iO handle that still gets smart features. Check two claims before buying: there is no screen in the handle, and the charger is the standard stand that can take 12 to 16 hours, not a magnetic fast charger.

Strengths

  • The three-state pressure sensor tells you when you press too softly as well as too hard.
  • Backlit mode icons show the active mode, a step up from the icon-less iO3 and iO4.
  • At 64 dB it is quieter than Oral-B’s own stated average and comfortable to use.
  • It includes a hard travel case and a 2-year warranty.
  • Real-time app coaching with a 2-minute timer and a 30-second pacer.

Weaknesses

  • No display: the handle uses backlit icons, despite Oral-B’s own page listing an interactive display.
  • The charger is a standard stand that takes up to 16 hours, not the magnetic fast charger.
  • The app is effectively mandatory for settings beyond the factory defaults, and customization lives there.
  • Six-zone tracking is coarse; brushing only the outside of a zone can still report good coverage.
  • iO-specific heads cost about $12 each, roughly double standard Oral-B heads, and are needed every 3 months.
  • Owners report battery and charging failures and black mould inside the head-to-handle joint.

What the extra money buys

The iO5 is the cheapest iO handle with Bluetooth and real-time coaching. It shares the redesigned iO motor and adds a light-ring pressure sensor that runs white for low, green for correct and red for excessive pressure, with the motor slowing on red. Backlit icons show which of the five modes is active. Two independent hands-on reviewers both concluded there is no cleaning reason to pay for the iO5 over the iO3, and Electric Teeth says it cleans as well as the iO3; the premium buys the sensor feedback, the icons and the app.

Charging and the app

The supplied charger is the standard Oral-B stand with a 1.2 m hardwired cable, not the magnetic fast charger, and a full charge can take 12 to 16 hours; the magnetic 3-hour charger starts at the iO7. Owners and reviewers name the slow charge as the model’s main complaint. The app carries session scoring, a pressure display and 6-zone tracking, but it tracks only six zones, so you can brush the outside of a zone and be told coverage is good. TechAdvisor’s reviewer found the position sensing reasonable but the angle often wrong, and customization beyond factory settings lives only in the app.

Brush heads, running costs and reliability

iO handles need iO-specific heads, which are about 10% deeper than standard Oral-B heads and sold in four styles. Electric Teeth puts them at about $12 each against roughly $5 for a conventional head, or about $30 for four at US retail (TechAdvisor, 2024). Heads go every 3 months, and Electric Teeth estimates roughly $228 of ownership cost over 3 years at the $120 retail price. There is no paid tier or subscription, and the app is free.

Two owner clusters recur without a measured rate. One is battery and charging failure: owners report brushes that will not power on or hold charge, intermittent 0:00 brush times that Oral-B replaced after about a year, and battery level dropping from 40-50% to zero. The other is black mould inside the brush head where it meets the handle, which Electric Teeth also flags as a grime trap and which appears across the iO range rather than only on the iO5. The handle is sealed and not user-serviceable, and the 2-year warranty covers defects from the purchase date.

Is it worth it?

Buy it near $96 to $110, where the smart features are a genuine bonus, rather than at Oral-B’s own $119.99 direct price, which sits about $25 below the iO6 and its real display. Above $120, or if you will not use the app, spend the money on the iO3 instead. The US store still lists the iO5, but Electric Teeth’s UK page reported in May 2026 that it is being discontinued and delisted there, so if you want this exact model, buying sooner is the lower-risk choice.

Which model this is

This page covers the Oral-B iO Series 5, ASIN B0B5YPHMW8, sold in the US in Matte Black and Matte White. It is not the iO3, iO4, iO6 or any other iO model: the iO5 has five modes including Intense Clean and Super Sensitive but no Gum Care, Bluetooth with 6-zone tracking, and no handle display. The iO6 swaps Super Sensitive for Gum Care and adds a color display, and the iO7 adds the magnetic fast charger.
