Summary
A bare-tool cordless angle grinder for M18 battery owners who want 6-inch wheel capacity and a brake that stops accessories in under 3 seconds. Check availability before you buy: Milwaukee’s US site lists the 2980-20 as no longer available, so new stock is limited to remaining retailer inventory.
Strengths
- 13A corded-grinder power in a cordless body that takes 4-1/2" to 6" wheels.
- The RAPIDSTOP brake stops accessories in under 3 seconds.
- Tool-free FIXTEC nut and guard make accessory changes fast.
- Metal housing and gearing system.
- REDLINK PLUS overload protection and electronic clutch guard against kickback and overload.
- A 5-year tool warranty from the official manual.
Weaknesses
- Bare tool: no battery, charger or grinding wheel in the box.
- Discontinued on Milwaukee’s US site; new stock is limited to remaining retailer inventory.
- No instrumented independent test of this exact model exists; the closest coverage is a 2023 lineup comparison.
- Owner discussions could not be retrieved, so real-world reliability signals are missing.
- Milwaukee does not publish weight or length for this model; retailer figures are unverified.
- Near sibling-level prices it competes with the in-production 3672, which adds ONE-KEY and variable speed.

Power and braking
Milwaukee rates the POWERSTATE brushless motor at 9,000 RPM with the power equivalent of a 13A corded grinder. The RAPIDSTOP brake stops all accessories in under 3 seconds, and REDLINK PLUS overload protection plus an electronic clutch guard against overload and kickback.
Some retailer spec sheets list 8,500 RPM for this model; that figure belongs to the smaller 2880-20 sibling, and Milwaukee’s page and manual both say 9,000 RPM. Pro Tool Reviews’ 2023 hands-on lineup comparison covered the 2980-20 and reached the same conclusions about its positioning. Its 2024 review of the successor 3672 measured a 2-second brake stop and reported no power drop or stalls against a 13A corded benchmark while grinding angle iron; that is line-level context, not exact-model proof.
What is in the box
The 2980-20 ships as a bare tool: grinder, FIXTEC nut, T27 guard, back flange, wrench and side handle. Battery, charger and grinding wheel are not included, so M18 owners who lack the platform still pay for it. Recurring costs are M18 batteries and charger if you do not already own them, 5/8"-11 wheels and discs, and guards and parts as needed.
Availability, warranty and service
Milwaukee’s current US page states the 2980-20 is no longer available, and a December 2025 Wayback capture shows the same discontinued status; new-unit retail stock is limited to remaining retailer inventory. The official operator’s manual documents a 5-year limited tool warranty against defects in material and workmanship for the original purchaser from an authorized distributor in the US and Canada, with batteries excluded. Milwaukee publishes a service parts list for the 2980-20 (bulletin 54-38-2900), so documented service parts exist, though part availability and pricing were not verified. Discontinued status complicates warranty service claims and resale, so verify seller warranty terms before purchase.
Is it worth it?
Pro Tool Reviews reported the bare tool at about $229 in January 2023 and a kit with two XC6.0 batteries, a charger and a bag at about $479. The 2880-20 sibling lists at $229.99 at Western Ranch Supply and $229.00 at Outdoor Supply Hardware. At or below the historical bare-tool level it undercuts the sibling while offering 6-inch capacity and the 13A-class motor, assuming the 5-year warranty from purchase still applies. In the $230-329 window it is harder to justify: the 2880-20 offers similar ergonomics at a similar price for 4-1/2"/5" work, and the 3672 successor adds ONE-KEY, variable speed and a documented 2-second brake at $329 bare in 2024 review pricing. Above $329 it is weak value against the in-production 3672 unless the 6-inch, 13A-class paddle-no-lock format is specifically required. For context, the 2886-20 flathead lists at $329.00 at Motion, a 3670-20 and 2880-20 bundle was $359.00 on sale versus $558.00 MSRP at MaxTool, and a 3670-20 kit with a FORGE XC 8.0 Ah battery was $499.00 at Home Depot.
Which model this is
This page covers the Milwaukee 2980-20, the M18 FUEL 4-1/2"-6" Braking Grinder with a paddle switch and no-lock, sold as a bare tool. Do not confuse it with the 2880-20, 2886-20, 2888-20 or 2986-20 (4-1/2"/5" models at 8,500 RPM), the FORGE-era 3670-20, or the 3672 and 3676-20 with ONE-KEY. The Amazon listing is ASIN B0DNGQL3TV.
