Summary
The Milwaukee 2584-20 is a cordless M12 FUEL 6-inch random orbital sander with a fine 3/32-inch orbit, built for final primer and clear-coat preparation. It is sold bare, so check that you already own M12 batteries and a dust extractor before paying the tool-only price.
Strengths
- The 3/32-inch orbit is made for final primer and clear-coat prep, not filler removal.
- The palm grip, feathering trigger and wide speed dial help control curved panels and edges.
- M12 cordless operation removes the air or power tether while still allowing a dust hose.
- Shop Tool Reviews called the connected dust extraction nearly complete in its test.
- Two soft pads in the box cover both hook-and-loop and PSA abrasives.
- Milwaukee publishes exact factory parts IDs, so the correct variant is easy to identify.
Weaknesses
- Runtime is the trade-off; a carpenter testing the M12 sander on wood called battery drain and cost significant drawbacks.
- It is sold bare, so batteries, a charger and an extractor are extra.
- One owner reported static shocks only when a vacuum hose was connected.
- One February 2026 owner reported an M12 six-inch sander smoking after about a month and eight uses.
- The fine orbit is not meant for thick-coat stripping, fast stock removal or shaping filler.
- The 6-inch pad needs correctly sized, hole-matched abrasives, so common 5-inch packs will not fit.

Full research notes and sources
Fine finishing, not stripping
The 2584-20 is tuned for the last stages of paint work, where a fine 3/32-inch orbit and a light touch matter more than fast cutting. Its sibling 2585-20 uses a 3/16-inch orbit for body-filler shaping and rougher prep. If you need to strip thick coatings or shape filler, the 2584 is the wrong tool; if you need a controlled finish on curved panels, it is the right one.
Runtime, batteries and running costs
There is no subscription and no fixed annual consumables schedule; the recurring cost is discs, plus pads and batteries over time. Example disc budgets at the Diablo 6-inch price of $13.97 per 10-pack: 20 discs a year is about $27.94 and 100 discs a year is about $139.70 (Home Depot, October 2026). Specialty automotive film costs more; a 3M Cubitron II 775L 220-grit disc is $3.03 with a 50-unit, $151.50 minimum (Grainger). A CP2.5 battery is $79 (Home Depot, October 2026), so a one-battery starter setup is $408 for the tool and pack before a charger, abrasives or an extractor.
Runtime is the weak point: Milwaukee claims up to five doors of primer sanding on one High Output CP2.5 battery, which is not a minute-by-minute guarantee, and a carpenter testing the M12 sander on wood found battery drain a real drawback.
Parts and what owners pay
The exact replacement pads are sold by Milwaukee dealers. A soft hook-and-loop pad 49-36-2583 is $39.99 at Home Depot and $44.99 at Acme Tools (Grainger’s industrial list is $75.14); the soft PSA pad 49-36-2585 is $44.99 at Northern Tool (Grainger $75–78). Both wear when the hook face stops holding discs or the foam tears. Other parts in the service diagram, including the vacuum port kits and the quick-change mechanism, are factory service identifiers rather than normal replacements.
Is it worth it?
Home Depot and RedToolStore both listed the bare tool at $329 (October 2026), above the $299 launch bare price and the $449 announced kit price. It is attractive below $260 if you already run M12, fair from $260 to $299 for regular professional paint work, and ordinary retail from $300 to $329. If fast filler removal is the job, the 2585-20 with its 3/16-inch orbit was also $329 at Home Depot. For ordinary woodworking, the corded DEWALT DWE6423K was $102.88 at Home Depot, far cheaper with no battery downtime.
Which model this is
This page covers the 2584-20, the 3/32-inch fine-orbit M12 sander. The 2585-20 is the 3/16-inch aggressive-orbit model, and the 2584-22XC is the battery-and-charger kit. Do not mix up the three when you order pads or abrasives.
