Summary
A thin, quiet 13.8-inch Windows laptop built on a Snapdragon X Elite chip, aimed at people who live in a browser and Office and want all-day battery without carrying a charger. Check that the Windows apps you depend on run natively on ARM before you buy, because emulated x86 apps and some installers do not.
Strengths
- Real-world battery life that makes a Windows laptop charger-optional.
- 16GB base RAM and a 120Hz HDR screen with much smaller bezels.
- The haptic trackpad feels far better than older Surface Laptops.
- Fanless-in-practice quietness and a cool chassis in normal use.
- ARM64-native apps run comparably to x86 laptops.
- iFixit rates it 8/10 for repairability, helped by the removable SSD.
Weaknesses
- Heavy x86 apps are not viable under emulation; a 4K video edit stuttered and some installers refuse to run on ARM.
- Gaming is a real weakness, with limited support, crashing titles and anti-cheat drivers that do not work.
- There is no Surface Pen or Slim Pen support, which undercuts local drawing features.
- No OLED option and no anti-reflective coating, so the screen can glare.
- The keyboard is considered mediocre next to rivals.
- The bundled 39W adapter will not fast-charge, so a 65W charger is an extra purchase.

Battery life and the charging catch
Microsoft claims up to 20 hours of local video playback and up to 13 hours of active web use on the 13.8-inch model. That 20-hour figure comes from an April 2024 test on preproduction Snapdragon X Plus devices at 150 nits, not the X Elite config sold here, so treat the web-browsing number as the realistic one.
The bundled 39W adapter covers normal use but will not fast-charge. Getting from 5% to 80% quickly takes a 65W or higher supply, sold separately. The Verge measured about 7 hours of mixed heavy use at 100% brightness outdoors, 4 hours of evening use at 50% brightness for 25% battery, and sleep drain of roughly 2% over 13 hours; a 65W charger reached 0-80% in about an hour. TechRadar reported roughly 15 hours in regular use and 10 hours in its own video-playback test.
ARM, x86 and app compatibility
Native ARM64 apps perform comparably to x86 laptops, and that covers most browsing and Office work. The trap is emulation: emulated x86 apps lose performance and battery, and some vendors block ARM installation entirely. The Verge hit “This Windows architecture is not supported” from Google Drive for desktop and from many VPN apps. A 20-second 4K Premiere Pro edit stuttered and an export was projected at nearly five minutes, against 7 seconds on an RTX 4090 desktop.
Gaming runs into the same wall. Reviewers say to avoid it as a gaming laptop: support is limited, some titles crash or run mid-tier, and anti-cheat kernel drivers are unsupported. In Cyberpunk 2077, Auto SR forced 1024x768. PCWorld told gamers to steer clear.
Repairs and what it costs
iFixit rated the machine 8/10 for repairability, up from Microsoft’s historical scores, citing the user-removable SSD and easy bottom-cover removal while criticizing the soldered RAM. Microsoft lists replaceable components including the display assembly with camera, keyboard assembly with touchpad, removable SSD, battery, motherboard module (CPU and RAM), Surface Connect port, audio jack, speakers, enclosure, thermal module and feet. It publishes service guides and sells parts to consumers through the Microsoft Store and iFixit for out-of-warranty repair, with QR-code access to instructions.
The exact X Elite 12-core, 16GB, 512GB config was $1,399.99 at the Microsoft Store US on 2026-10-09. Launch pricing put the 13.8-inch at $999.99 and the 13.8-inch X Elite at $1,399.99. Microsoft Complete, which adds accidental damage, mechanical breakdown and battery wear coverage, is $149 for two years, $219 for three or $299 for four. Because the bundled 39W adapter will not fast-charge, budget for a 65W charger if you want a fast top-up.
Which model this is
This page covers the 13.8-inch 7th Edition with the Snapdragon X Elite 12-core, 16GB and 512GB. It is the first Surface Laptop with Windows on ARM and the first with an NPU for Copilot+ features, announced 20 May 2024 and released 18 June 2024. The same 13.8-inch chassis also exists in a business/Intel variant with Core Ultra 5 or 7 processors announced 30 January 2025; those Intel configs are a different machine from the Snapdragon model here. Colors are Platinum, Black, Sapphire and Dune. Microsoft has since moved on to a 2026 successor lineup, so this 7th Edition is a late-cycle purchase.
