Levoit LV600S: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

The LV600S is a 6 L top-fill hybrid ultrasonic and steam humidifier whose recurring problems are upkeep rather than electronics: white dust and odors on tap water, a weekly vinegar teardown of the base, warm-mist hiss that sleep mode does not reduce, and a measured runtime of 17 to 20.6 hours against the 50-hour claim on the box. Electricity is the bill that matters, because TechGearLab estimated $163.53 a year for roughly a quarter of use with the boiler running, and distilled water plus a monthly sponge swap sit on top of that. At $109.99 from Levoit or the VeSync store in October 2026 the money is defensible in a large room with auto mode switched on; below $110 a smaller cool-mist model does the same job for less.

Yearly running cost

Electricity is the dominant term. TechGearLab estimates $163.53 per year for roughly a quarter of a year of use, with the boiler in hybrid mode the reason: warm mist makes the unit draw like an electric kettle, and the same review puts ultrasonic-only at about ten times cheaper to run. The base is rated at 280 W on 120 V, 60 Hz, and RTINGS measured 136 Wh of total consumption in its own configuration. Water is the second term: Levoit recommends distilled water, and TechGearLab notes that the ultrasonic saving is largely cancelled by buying distilled or reverse-osmosis water — one owner trying to humidify a 600 sq ft apartment reports about 10 gallons of distilled water a week. Consumables are the third term: a monthly water filter sponge and an absorption pad every 2–4 weeks, plus aroma pads as needed, but no per-item prices were published on the pages read, so no consumable total can be computed. There is no subscription or app fee; app and voice control come with the unit.

When it is a good buy

Levoit’s US store and the VeSync store both asked $109.99 in October 2026, which matches TechGearLab’s $110 list price and the $110 Levoit quote in Wirecutter’s buying panel. At that number the LV600S earns its money in a large room: it is Wirecutter’s top pick, three independent labs tested it, and it is one of the few ultrasonic humidifiers whose humidistat regulates instead of only running. The same money also buys the highest measured running cost in TechGearLab’s comparison and the lowest cleaning score RTINGS gave, so buyers running warm mist daily should weigh the boiler and buyers in leaky or very large rooms should weigh the 17-hour measured runtime. Below $110 the smaller Levoits score better on the things that cost time and money; above $110 a constant-use buyer should move to an evaporative unit instead.
