Summary

A compact single-serve K-Cup brewer for small kitchens and tight budgets, with three brew sizes, a removable 42 oz tank and a Strong button that thickens the coffee. Check the warranty before you buy: Keurig covers it for one year and these machines have a reputation for failing early.

Strengths

  • Brews a cup in under a minute once it is warm, with no wait between cups.
  • The Strong button adds real body to Keurig’s usually thin coffee.
  • The removable 42 oz tank lifts out for filling and cleaning.
  • One of the few Keurig machines that sells for under $100.
  • Five buttons and two removable parts make it simple to run.
  • Travel mugs up to 7 in fit once you take the drip tray out.

Weaknesses

  • Coffee is weaker than drip or espresso, and the Strong button only partly fixes it.
  • The smallest brew is 8 oz, with no 6 oz option.
  • It splashes during brewing and takes more counter space than its looks suggest.
  • Keurig machines have a reputation for breaking early and being hard to repair.
  • The warranty lasts only one year.
  • Descaling has been blamed for failures; a 2022 lawsuit settled for $950,000 in 2025.

Which model this is

This page covers the K-Express with the 42 oz reservoir and 8/10/12 oz brew sizes, Keurig model 5000358267. The ASIN is B09715G57M. Don’t confuse it with the K-Express Essentials (model 500036269), which has a 36 oz reservoir and 6/8/10 oz brew sizes and sometimes appears under the same name.

Coffee quality and brew temperature

Reviews disagree on how hot the K-Express brews. A Barista’s Daughter claims 195°F, Consumer Outlook measured 160°F, and Wirecutter says most Keurig machines brew around 192°F, all below the 195-205°F the SCA recommends. The coffee itself is the bigger issue. Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide and Mashable all call Keurig output thin next to drip or espresso, and the Strong button improves it only so far. Mashable also noted splashing and a larger footprint than the minimalist look suggests.

Reliability, descaling and the warranty

Keurig has a reputation for machines that break early and cannot be repaired, and the K-Express carries only a one-year warranty. Owners on r/keurig report units that never worked out of the box, and one user claimed the Essentials variant lasts about three months. A 2022 lawsuit alleged Keurig machines failed after descaling; it settled in 2025 for $950,000. Descaling is recommended every 250 brews, or every three to six months, and the machine has no user-serviceable internal parts. Nobody publishes a failure rate, so treat the risk as real but unquantified.

Running costs

Pods are the real cost: K-Cups run about $0.50-0.62 each, so heavy drinkers can spend more on pods in a year than the machine costs. Keurig listed the machine at $89.99, down from $109.99; Target listed $109.99 regular with a $69.99 sale; and Best Buy listed $84.95 (Keurig, Target, Best Buy, 2026). Descaling solution is a smaller recurring cost.

Is it worth it?

At $70 or less the K-Express is strong value for a compact brewer with a removable tank and a Strong button. At $85-100 it is fair value, competing with used higher-end Keurigs. Above $100 the value drops as the K-Supreme and K-Mini Mate come into range with better features or smaller footprints. If you want better coffee, no pod machine at this price will give it to you.
