Summary
The JBL Quantum 100 is the entry-level wired gaming headset in JBL’s Quantum lineup, built around a detachable boom mic that owners and testers call excellent for the price. The one thing to check before buying is what you will listen to: the boomy, bass-heavy tuning suits game audio, not music, and the fixed cable means there is no cheap repair when it frays.
Strengths
- The detachable boom mic is the reason to buy it: owners and testers call it full-bodied, distortion-free and excellent for the price.
- One 3.5 mm plug works with PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, mobile, Mac and VR, with no dongles or drivers.
- At 220 g it stays light through long sessions, and the earpads fit large ears.
- The mic pops off and the earcups rotate flat, so it stores without drama.
- Basic use is plug-and-play; QuantumENGINE is an option, not a requirement.
Weaknesses
- The sound is boomy and bass-heavy: fine for games, but music comes out muddled, with rhythm guitar steamrolling the mix.
- The 1.2 m cable is fixed, so a frayed cable means replacing the whole headset, a common failure point in budget headsets.
- The all-plastic build feels cheap, and JBL sells no user-replaceable parts for this model.
- Comfort splits owners: some call the cushions thin, and it clamps fairly tightly for a gaming headset.
- Isolation is passive only; it blocks very little background noise, so noisy rooms leak in.

Sound: game audio first, music second
Independent testing is thin but consistent: RTINGS scores it 6.8/10, SoundGuys 6.4/10 for the functionally identical 100P, and both single out the microphone. The same tests describe a boomy, bass-heavy profile with a large bump between 70 and 400 Hz. For games the over-tuned bass is mostly fine: footsteps and directional cues stay clear, which is why owners rate it well for competitive play. For music the tuning turns against you: SoundGuys reports bass dominating, drums and vocals pushed back, and one owner describes songs that “feel kinda flat”. If you want one headset for both gaming and music, this compromise is the thing to check before buying.
Microphone
The mic is the headset’s strongest part. RTINGS calls it excellent: full-bodied, mostly clear, distortion-free. Owners in r/JBL threads echo that, rating it 8/10 in one comparison. SoundGuys notes it runs loud and can blow out the bass on lower voices; moving it farther from your mouth fixes that. The boom is detachable, uses a flexible wire for positioning, and has a mute.
Comfort, build and the fixed cable
At 220 g the Quantum 100 is light, and SoundGuys scores the 100P’s comfort 8.5/10: lightweight, easy to fit, good for long sessions. Owners are split: one r/JBL thread has owners rating the earpads 4/10, saying they barely feel like cushions, and RTINGS notes it clamps fairly tightly for a gaming headset. Treat the difference as head shape and expectations rather than a defect. The all-plastic build draws “feels very cheap” comments across multiple owner threads, and the 1.2 m cable is not user-replaceable. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat the fixed cable as the known long-term risk rather than a proven defect.
Running costs and value
There are no running costs: no batteries, no subscriptions, no consumables. If something breaks, the bill is a whole replacement. Price context from the research: Best Buy lists the black model at $44.75, JBL sells refurbished units for $29.96 (down from $44.95), SoundGuys tested it at $39.99 in 2023, and an archived r/buildapcsales thread shows a $19.95 sale price, down from $39.95. The headset has been on sale in the $20–45 range for years. Below $25 the mic alone justifies it; from $26–40 it is a reasonable wired gaming headset. At $41–50 the trade-offs get harder: RTINGS finds the HyperX Cloud Stinger more comfortable, better built and vastly better isolated. Above $50 there is no case for it.
Which model this is
This page covers the JBL Quantum 100, model JBLQUANTUM100BLK in black, the entry-level wired headset in JBL’s Quantum gaming lineup since about 2020. The 100P (PlayStation) and 100X (Xbox) are functionally identical to it, differing only in color. The 100M2 is a real revision with breathable fabric memory foam earcups and a different microphone design, so complaints aimed at the M2 (treble too prominent, mic that stays straight up) may not apply to the original 100. Do not confuse it with the Quantum 200/300/400/600/800 or the Quantum One.
The Amazon listing for the black model is ASIN B084CWCJTW.
