Summary

An entry-level 14-inch Windows laptop built around the 2022-era AMD Ryzen 5 230, sold by HP as the lowest-cost AMD configuration in the OmniBook 3 14 range. Check the “Ryzen AI” label before you buy: its 16 TOPS NPU sits below the 40 TOPS Microsoft requires for Copilot+ PC features.

Strengths

  • The lowest-cost AMD build in the OmniBook 3 14 range, with a 1920 × 1200 anti-glare panel.
  • Six cores and Radeon 760M graphics should outrun the 4-core, Radeon 610M unit RTINGS tested.
  • Two USB-C ports carry 10 Gbps, Power Delivery and DisplayPort, next to full-size HDMI 2.1.
  • Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 cover current wireless standards without adapters.
  • Thin and light for the class at 0.58 in (14.73 mm) and 3.1 lbs (1.41 kg).
  • A 1080p IR camera with HDR handles Windows Hello and video calls.

Weaknesses

  • The Ryzen 5 230 is a 2022-era Mendocino (Zen 2) chip from the Ryzen 7020 series, not a current-generation processor.
  • The “AMD Ryzen AI” branding is easy to misread: 16 TOPS is below the 40 TOPS needed for Copilot+ PC features.
  • The base 8 GB runs single-channel in one SODIMM slot, and 256 GB of storage is small.
  • The panel covers only 62.5% sRGB at 300 nits, so it is not for color-critical work.
  • No independent test of this exact 14z-hw000 build was found; reviews cover other chips.
  • Reliability signals are series- or brand-level, including swelling batteries and slow startup on similar-price HP laptops.

The processor is the catch

The 14z-hw000 is built around the AMD Ryzen 5 230: 6 cores, 12 threads, up to 4.9 GHz boost and 16 MB of L3 cache, with a 16 TOPS NPU. HP markets the chip under an “AMD Ryzen AI” badge, but 16 TOPS is well under the 40 TOPS needed for Copilot+ PC features, so treat Windows Studio Effects as the practical ceiling rather than the AI features on Copilot+ machines.

The architecture matters more than the core count. The Ryzen 5 230 is Mendocino, a Zen 2 design first shipped in 2022 in the Ryzen 7020 series, and HP does not put the architecture or release year on the product page. For browsing, Office and video it is fine. For heavy CPU work it is an older chip, and the single-channel 8 GB of the base model narrows memory bandwidth further.

What you get

The base build pairs 8 GB of DDR5-5600 memory with a 256 GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD; both are tight for a modern laptop. The display is a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS panel rated at 300 nits and 62.5% sRGB, adequate indoors for office work but dim and narrow-gamut for photo or video editing. The body measures 12.38 × 8.90 × 0.58 in and weighs 3.1 lbs, with two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports at 10 Gbps with Power Delivery and DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, a 3.5 mm jack, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. A 1080p IR camera handles Windows Hello. Configurations run from 8 GB/256 GB up to 32 GB/1 TB with Windows 11 Pro, all on the same Ryzen 5 230 and Radeon 760M platform.

Test coverage and owner reports

No independent instrumented test of the exact 14z-hw000 exists. The closest is RTINGS’ review of another OmniBook 3 14 configuration with a 4-core Ryzen 5 40 and Radeon 610M, which it calls an entry-level budget laptop that is bad for gaming and lacks the power for modern AAA titles. The 14z-hw000 has more cores and a stronger integrated GPU, so it should do better, but nobody has measured it. Reviews of other OmniBook 3 14 variants, the Snapdragon X and Ryzen AI 5 340 models, do not transfer to this build.

Owner evidence is thin and mostly one step away from this model. One HP Community post describes a motherboard failure within 7 days on a 14-ha0000, a different CPU variant, with a repair that took more than 3 weeks. A Reddit poster reports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth dying on an OmniBook 3, and another asks which port does what on a 14z-ha000. Consumer Reports’ August 2026 member survey says HP laptops at a similar price showed more than typical swelling batteries and slow startup, though that entry covers the Snapdragon X 14-hz0099nr. Treat these as caution signals for the family rather than a failure rate for this build.

Price and value

HP lists the 8 GB/256 GB base at $449.99 against a $999.99 reference price, and a Glacier Silver base build at $429.99 (HP.com, October 2026). At that level it is a workable budget Windows laptop for web, Office and streaming. Toward $450–$600 the Ryzen AI 5 340 (14z-hy000) or Snapdragon X (14z-hz000) machines enter the same range with newer silicon, and above $600 this configuration is poor value. Starlit Blue and Warm Gold cost $20 more (HP.com, October 2026). There are no recurring costs beyond ordinary software subscriptions; memory and storage use standard parts.

Which model this is

The “hw” suffix in 14z-hw000 denotes the AMD Ryzen 5 230 with Radeon 760M graphics, HP product number C38JNAV_1. It is distinct from the 14z-hy000 (Ryzen AI 5 340/7 350), the 14z-hz000 (Snapdragon X), the 14z-hu000 (Intel Core 5 120U) and the 14z-ha000 (Ryzen AI 5 330/7 350). Every color and memory/storage configuration above shares the same hw000 hardware. Match on the 14z-hw000 model code before buying.
