Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 2K wired indoor camera built for households already inside Google Home, with free alerts for people, animals and vehicles. Check the subscription before you buy: without Google Home Premium you get only a few hours of ten-second event previews and no familiar-face alerts.

Strengths

  • PCMag rated it 4.0 in its review, with sharp 2K video and detailed black-and-white night video.
  • Motion alerts arrived immediately and were accurate in testing; Tom’s Guide measured about a 2–3 second alert delay.
  • Two-way audio was loud with no distortion.
  • Free person, animal and vehicle alerts cover the basics without a subscription.
  • Small, and set up by scanning a QR code in the Google Home app.
  • The 152° field of view covers a large room or hallway without pan/tilt.

Weaknesses

  • The free tier keeps only a few hours of ten-second previews; full clips need a plan.
  • Familiar-face, sound, garage-door and all Gemini features are subscription-only.
  • There is no color night vision; the infrared output is black-and-white.
  • No mechanical pan/tilt or tracking.
  • Cloud storage only, with no microSD or local option.
  • The attached 10 ft power cable cannot be replaced if damaged.

Free tier versus Google Home Premium

Out of the box the camera keeps a ring buffer of event previews with every clip capped at 10 seconds. Google’s store pages say 6 hours and Google’s own installation article says 3, so treat a few hours as the reliable figure; the 10-second cap is the part all pages agree on. Free alerts cover person, animal, vehicle and activity-zone motion.

Everything a security camera is normally bought for needs Google Home Premium: familiar-face recognition, person-talking, glass-breaking and smoke or carbon-monoxide detection, zoomed-in alert previews, and the Gemini features. Standard adds 30 days of event history and Advanced adds 60 days plus up to 10 days of 24/7 continuous recording. The free tier cannot be extended with local storage because there is none. Gemini worked in testing, but WIRED reported repeated person and pet misidentification, and Tom’s Guide saw known people labeled unknown and intermittent search failures, so important alerts still need a visual check.

Night vision and image quality

The night vision is two 850 nm infrared LEDs reaching 15 ft (4.5 m), and it produces black-and-white video, not color. PCMag called the daylight video sharp and well-saturated and the night video highly detailed, and WIRED’s side-by-side testing with older Nest cameras called the 2K and wider-view jump an immediate upgrade. The camera is a 2K unit at 2560x1440, below 4K but above 1080p, with a 152° diagonal field of view Google calls its widest and tallest yet, 6× digital zoom and H.264 and H.265 encoding.

Setup, mounting and upkeep

Setup is QR-code based in the Google Home app and includes a firmware update before it finishes; Tom’s Guide reported about five minutes from unboxing to a live feed. The camera runs on an attached 10 ft (3 m) USB-C cable and an included 7.5W adapter; there is no PoE or Ethernet path, so “wired” only means power arrives on a cable.

For a wall mount, Google intends a flat surface 6 to 6.5 ft above the ground, with the included cable clip and screw securing the cable 6 in below the camera if the mount is higher than 6.5 ft. Wall anchors are required on drywall, brick, stone, masonry or stucco but must not be used on wood, and you supply the drill, the 7/64 in or 1/4 in bits and a number 2 Phillips screwdriver. Where local law requires it, you must display a notice that the camera is recording.

The camera has an RGB status LED: green when connected, pulsing green while streaming, blue during setup and red on a connectivity issue. It is a sealed unit with cloud storage, no user-replaceable parts and no local storage, so there is nothing to clean or upgrade. The attached cable is the one hardware weak point: Tom’s Guide notes it cannot be replaced if damaged, and an owner report describes a 3rd-gen camera that stopped powering on after the cable was chewed, with no obvious consumer replacement path.

Running costs and warranty

Without a plan the subscription cost is nothing, but you are limited to the short preview buffer. Google Home Premium Standard is $10/month or $100/year, and Advanced is $20/month or $200/year, sold separately from the camera; one plan covers a home’s compatible cameras. If the camera drew the full 7.5 W adapter rating all year that would be 65.7 kWh, though Google publishes no measured draw, so treat that as an upper bound.

Warranty is one year, or three years with a paid Nest Pro membership in the US and Canada, and Google commits only to legally required security updates, without publishing how long that window lasts. Owner support reports are mixed and thin: one Walmart reviewer said Google troubleshooting did not solve a Wi-Fi connection failure and returned the camera. An owner who has used generations 1 through 3 of the indoor line says he sees no significant difference between the 3rd and 2nd gen, so compare against a discounted 2nd gen before paying a premium.

Is it worth it?

Buy it on sale, and only if you already use Google Home and will pay for Premium. Google Store and Best Buy both listed it at $129.99 in October 2026 and Walmart at $94.99, against a $99.99 launch MSRP. At the launch price the hardware was competitive and PCMag measured it as genuinely sharp in daylight and at night. At the higher price the subscription matters more than the camera: a yearly plan can cost more over a few years than the hardware itself, and without a plan the camera is a live-view monitor with a ten-second clip buffer. Buyers who do not need Google’s ecosystem should compare the Wyze Cam v4 at about $44.98 with local microSD recording or the eufy Indoor Cam S350 at $139.99 with motorized 360° coverage.

Which model this is

This page covers the 2025 refresh of the Nest Cam Indoor, wired 3rd generation, sold in Snow, Hazel and Berry. It is not battery powered, and none of the Nest wired cameras are PoE or have Ethernet. Do not merge it with the older first-generation 1080p wired Nest Cam Indoor, the 2nd-generation wired indoor model, the battery Nest Cam, the Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) or the Nest Doorbell wired 3rd gen. The US Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0FN7DLWGF.
