Summary
Garmin’s top-tier outdoor smartwatch for backcountry use pairs a full titanium case, multi-band GNSS and built-in satellite inReach with a solar-charging MIP display. Check the display before you buy: the Solar model uses a 1.4-inch 280×280 MIP panel, not the brighter AMOLED screen some listings still show.
Strengths
- Full titanium case, a first for the Fenix line.
- Battery life stretches to 57 days with solar exposure.
- Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ keeps tracking accurate.
- inReach satellite messaging and SOS are built in.
- 64 GB of storage holds maps and music.
- The LED flashlight has white, red and green modes.
Weaknesses
- The Solar MIP display runs 280×280, well below the AMOLED’s 466×466.
- inReach needs the watch pointed at the sky to grab satellites, which owners call awkward.
- inReach needs an active service plan; the entry level is $8 a month.
- At 16.6 mm, the Solar case is thicker than the AMOLED’s 15.8 mm.
- Solar models miss the on-device watch face editor.
- There is no long-term reliability data; the watch launched in August 2026.

The display trade-off
The Solar inReach 51mm uses a 1.4-inch MIP transflective panel at 280×280 pixels under a Power Sapphire lens. The AMOLED inReach 51mm uses a 1.5-inch 466×466 panel rated at 3,000 nits. Maps and text look coarser on the MIP screen. In exchange, Garmin rates the Solar at up to 30 days in smartwatch mode and up to 57 days with solar, against 31 days for the AMOLED. Those solar figures assume all-day wear with three hours a day at 50,000 lux, a bright summer day. If the screen matters more to you, the AMOLED inReach 51mm is the same watch with a better display and shorter battery life.
inReach on your wrist
inReach gives the watch LTE and satellite connectivity, including SOS, but every feature needs an active service plan; the entry level is $8 a month. To get a satellite fix you hold the watch toward the sky, and owners in r/Garmin and the Garmin forums describe this as awkward next to an inReach Mini or Messenger, which tolerate more positions. The watch also uses a different satellite system than Garmin’s inReach handhelds, so coverage is not identical. LTE calling needs the Garmin Messenger app on the recipient’s phone, and calls do not use a separate phone number, so this is not a standalone phone replacement.
Battery life and solar
Garmin rates the 51mm Solar at up to 30 days in smartwatch mode, up to 57 days with solar, and up to 42 days in expedition mode with solar. GPS mode runs up to 132–186 hours, or 740–1,000 hours with solar. The solar numbers assume all-day wear with three hours a day at 50,000 lux. The Fenix 8 Pro had no solar option; the Fenix 9 Pro restores it. Garmin Epic, a group activity storytelling feature, and map panning 30% faster than the Fenix 8 round out the new software.
Is it worth it?
Garmin US lists this watch at $1,299.99, the most expensive Fenix 9 Pro variant. The $100 premium over the non-solar AMOLED inReach 51mm buys solar charging and the MIP display but gives up display resolution and adds thickness. The $100 premium over the non-inReach Solar 51mm (part 010-04339-05, $1,199.99) buys LTE and satellite connectivity plus the $8 a month plan. The Fenix 9 Pro inReach lineup begins at $1,199.99 for the 43mm, the Fenix 9 Pro without inReach begins at $1,099.99, and the standard Fenix 9 begins at $999.99. The previous generation, the Fenix 8 Pro, launched at $1,299.99 and is now on sale at $1,049.99 (August 2026). If you want the titanium build and the maps but can live without satellite, the non-inReach Solar is the better value; if you want the sharpest screen, the AMOLED inReach 51mm costs $100 less with the same inReach features.
Which model this is
This page covers the Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach Solar 51mm, part 010-04339-00. Garmin’s US configurator lists it only in Titanium with a Pebble Gray/Silver Gray silicone band; the Graphite/Black band some listings show belongs to the AMOLED inReach 51mm, part 010-04337-21. Do not confuse it with the non-solar Fenix 9 Pro or the standard Fenix 9, which has a polymer case.
