Summary

Garmin’s mainstream AMOLED lifestyle watch, a stainless-steel Forerunner 570 derivative with ECG, multi-band GPS and a built-in flashlight. The thing to check before buying is firmware maturity: early units drew a cluster of freezes, boot-loops and post-update battery drain tied to specific software versions.

Strengths

  • Multi-band GPS on both sizes, matching the identically priced Forerunner 570.
  • Free on-device health and training metrics, plus ECG and a genuinely useful white/red flashlight.
  • Brighter AMOLED than the Venu 3 and an all-metal case reviewers call more premium.
  • Typical real-world battery of 9–12 days without always-on display, or about a week with daily workouts.
  • Light and comfortable at 38 g, and Venu 3 bands and charging cables reportedly fit.
  • Prompt alerts and stable day-to-day operation for a subset of owners.

Weaknesses

  • Owner sentiment is split: 45% of 94 scored verdicts recommend it, largely over firmware instability.
  • Mid-activity shutdowns, freezes and overnight boot-loops (“blue triangle”) cluster on early units and sometimes survive replacement.
  • Sudden battery drain after some firmware updates, though rebooting after each update reportedly helped.
  • Gorilla Glass 3 rather than sapphire, and owners report it scratches easily.
  • No on-watch maps, and fewer running features than Forerunner or Fenix models.
  • Sleep scores and Pulse Ox accuracy draw recurring complaints.

Battery life and charging

Garmin rates the 45 mm at up to 12 days in smartwatch mode, dropping to about 4 days with always-on display and rising to 25 days in battery-saver. Multi-band GPS costs more: about 17 hours, or 9 hours with music playing. Tom’s Guide’s testing matched the headline figure and got about a week with an hour-long workout a day and always-on off; CNET, on the 41 mm, averaged about 10 days without always-on and roughly 4 days with it. The Venu 3 45 mm was rated 14 days, so the newer watch is a small step back on paper.

Owner numbers vary widely. Reports run from about 12 days between charges to about 4 days, with one owner measuring roughly 2.5% per hour at two-thirds brightness with always-on during active testing, and a golf round costing about a day and a half. After some updates owners saw drain that a reboot fixed.

Firmware reliability on early units

This is the main risk. An owner-verdict aggregator that read 873 comments and scored 94 owners found only 45% recommending the watch; the largest complaint group is mid-activity shutdowns, freezes and overnight boot-loops, often called the blue triangle, sometimes on a replacement unit. Garmin’s own forums carry matching threads tied to firmware 14.12 and 17.33, and a June 2026 thread reports excessive overnight drain. Notebookcheck documented a January 2026 Garmin Connect update that also broke Fenix 8 and Forerunner 970 units. Newer verdicts are better: 54% recommend over the last six months. These are owner reports, not a measured defect rate.

Glass, maps and the small print

The screen is Gorilla Glass 3, not sapphire, and scratching is a common owner complaint, so a protector is a practical add-on. There are no on-watch maps, which owners coming from a Forerunner or Fenix miss. The ECG App is region- and software-dependent, and Garmin Connect Plus gates some coaching features at $7 a month while the base app and core tracking stay free. Garmin’s warranty runs one year; retailer bundles such as a 26-month CPS plan are third-party products separate from Garmin’s coverage.

Price and running costs

The Venu 4 45 mm launched at $549.99 on September 22, 2025, $100 above the Venu 3, and by mid-May 2026 it sat at $499.99 across Best Buy, Target, REI, Bloomingdale’s and Garmin’s own store. At $499.99 it is a reasonable buy next to the identically priced Forerunner 570, which lacks the ECG and flashlight; at $549.99 it competes badly with the $299 Vivoactive 6. The only recurring cost is optional Garmin Connect Plus at $7 a month; bands and a screen protector are the main accessories.

Which model this is

This page covers the 45 mm Venu 4, Garmin part 010-03014-01, the Silver case with a Silver Gray silicone band. The same hardware ships as 010-03014-00 (Slate with Black silicone) and 010-03014-03 (Slate bezel with Black silicone and Brown leather bands); the 41 mm case is a different watch with its own battery ratings, so check the size and not just the color. The Amazon listing for the Silver/Silver Gray unit is ASIN B0FRG19TD4. Don’t confuse it with the 41 mm Venu 4, the Forerunner 570 or the older Venu 3.
