Summary
The vívoactive 6 is a light 42mm fitness smartwatch with a bright AMOLED screen, Garmin’s full health suite and battery life that outlasts most rivals. Check your training needs before buying: there is no barometric altimeter, no multi-band GPS, no ECG and no skin-temperature sensor.
Strengths
- Light at 23g and comfortable enough to wear day and night, including sleep.
- Battery life is far better than an Apple Watch or Wear OS rival.
- Body Battery, sleep scores and the morning report turn readings into advice you can act on.
- Running dynamics, PacePro pacing and Garmin Coach punch above the watch’s price class.
- Garmin Pay and incident detection with live tracking cover payments and safety.
- 8GB of music storage (about 5.3GB usable) lets you leave the phone behind.
Weaknesses
- No barometric altimeter, so elevation tracking and stair counts are unreliable.
- No multi-band GPS; satellite lock is slower and less accurate than higher-end Garmin watches.
- Real battery life runs about 5–7 days, short of the 11-day claim.
- The buttons and plastic case feel cheap for a watch at this price.
- Software can feel sluggish, and some owners report bugs.
- No ECG or skin-temperature sensor, and no YouTube Music.

Battery life and charging
Garmin claims up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and 21 hours with GPS. In practice, WIRED got about a week with several daily activities, Tom’s Guide measured seven days of normal use, and T3 saw about five days with heavy use. Tom’s Guide also found 15 hours with GPS running constantly, well short of the 21-hour claim. Charging uses a proprietary Garmin plug, not USB-C and not wireless; WIRED called the charger an annoyance.
Fitness and health tracking
The 80+ sports apps cover running, cycling, pool swimming, golf, strength work, HIIT, yoga and more. Running dynamics (cadence, stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation), running power and PacePro grade-adjusted pacing come from Garmin’s higher-end watches, and Tom’s Guide and The Independent both rate them highly for the price.
The health side is the strong point: Body Battery, Sleep Coach with a sleep score, HRV status, stress tracking, Pulse Ox and the morning report. The Independent wore the watch for a couple of months and found sleep tracking detailed, though it missed the first hours of sleep on a few nights. Tom’s Guide found the new Smart Alarm needs fine-tuning.
What’s missing
The omissions are consistent across reviews: no barometric altimeter, no multi-band GPS, no ECG, no skin-temperature sensor, no speaker, no onboard maps, no turn-by-turn navigation, no LTE and no YouTube Music. Maps are breadcrumb-only. Responding to texts with the on-watch keyboard and viewing images in notifications work on Android but not iPhone. The heart-rate sensor is the Gen 4 Elevate, not the newer Gen 5 in the Venu 3.
Running costs and subscriptions
Core fitness tracking is free. Garmin Connect+ is an optional subscription at $7 a month or $70 a year that adds AI-powered Active Intelligence insights, a performance dashboard and enhanced live tracking; WIRED found the insights genuinely useful. Music streaming from Spotify or Deezer needs its own subscription. The watch gets feature updates over the air and through Garmin Express.
Is it worth it?
At about $229–250 it is strong value for a fitness-first buyer: the screen, battery, running features and health suite compete well, and the missing sensors are an acceptable trade-off. Around $250–280 it is fair value against the Apple Watch SE and Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, which are better smartwatches but have far worse battery life. At the $280–300 list price the omissions are harder to justify. Garmin lists the watch at $299.99; Backcountry lists it at $299.99, and REI and Best Buy at about $300 (2025). The street price at launch ran below list.
Which model this is
This page covers the vívoactive 6, part number 010-02985-00, the Slate case with a Black band. Garmin lists two sibling part numbers for the other colors, 010-02985-01 (Lunar Gold with Bone band) and 010-02985-02 (Metallic Jasper Green with Jasper Green band); the hardware is the same 42mm watch. The Amazon listing for this variant is ASIN B0F38GK1QZ. Don’t confuse it with the vívoactive 5, Venu 3, Forerunner or fenix lines.
