Summary
A 51mm titanium multisport GPS watch with a solar MIP screen, sapphire lens, 40m dive rating and multi-band GPS, built for outdoor athletes who want weeks of battery. Check the size and the battery reports before you buy: the case is heavy, and owners report runtimes well short of Garmin’s 30-day claim.
Strengths
- Battery life dwarfs most smartwatches: weeks per charge, not days.
- Multi-band GPS with SatIQ tracked accurately in independent tests and owner use.
- Offline maps and navigation are class-leading for the outdoors.
- Titanium and sapphire build with a 40m dive rating and MIL-STD-810H testing.
- The built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone add day-to-day utility.
- Dive-computer functions and offline maps need no extra subscription.
Weaknesses
- Owners widely report battery life well short of the 30-day claim, some getting 10–14 days.
- Firmware 12.35 caused severe drain for some owners, with reboots the only workaround.
- The MIP screen is lower-resolution and less vibrant than the AMOLED version.
- The 51mm, 95 g case is heavy and awkward on smaller wrists.
- No LTE, so calls, messages and voice need a paired phone over Bluetooth.
- No wireless charging, and the proprietary charger is slow at about 1.5 hours.

Battery life and the solar claim
Garmin rates the watch at up to 30 days in smartwatch mode and 48 days with solar, and the solar figure assumes 3 hours a day in 50,000 lux. In practice owners report 10–14 days, and some see 10–12% drain a day on light use. Firmware 12.35 was linked to drain of 30% or more per day for some users, with reboots as a temporary fix; Garmin said it was investigating, but the issue was still open at that point. An owner upgrading from a 7-year-old Fenix 5 Sapphire got roughly a third of the claimed runtime. Notebookcheck measured 78% drain over 15 days with all functions on, and about 7% an hour during multi-band GPS.
GPS, maps and navigation
Independent tests rate GPS accuracy excellent. GearJunkie called its track the most accurate and highest-resolution it had compared, Outdoor Gear Lab saw minimal inaccuracies with dual-frequency GNSS, and Wareable rated road, trail and open-water swim tracking very good. Runner’s World found GPS impressive but noted occasional wobbles under heavy tree cover. Outdoor Gear Lab measured 64 hours of continuous GPS recording on the 47mm model against Garmin’s 66-hour claim for that size.
Display, size and weight
The 1.4 in MIP screen is easy to read in direct sunlight but resolves at only 280 x 280 pixels, against 454 x 454 on the AMOLED model, and colors look paler with less smooth scrolling. The 51mm case weighs 95 g with the band; the 47mm version has the same screen size at 80 g. Reviewers repeatedly flag the 51mm body as a comfort concern on smaller wrists. There is no 43mm solar model, and the speaker is mono.
Heart rate and training accuracy
The Elevate Gen 5 optical sensor is good for steady work but can lag during high-intensity intervals and sprints; Wareable and Runner’s World both suggest a chest strap for serious heart-rate training.
Repairs, upkeep and warranty
Routine care means cleaning the watch and band and inspecting for damage before each use. The battery is not presented as a user part, and no repairability information was found beyond Garmin’s warranty service. Garmin provides a 24-month warranty in some regions; the US terms were not confirmed. The Fenix 8 shipped with notable software bugs that took several weeks to fix, and both OTA update failures and post-update drain have been reported.
Is it worth it?
At its $1,199.99 launch price the fēnix 8 Solar 51mm is one of the most expensive non-LTE smartwatches you can buy. Its case rests on battery life measured in weeks, a dive-rated build, multi-band GPS and full offline mapping. The tradeoffs are the MIP screen, the large and heavy case, no LTE and no wireless charging. The 47mm Solar launched at $1,099.99 and the 47mm AMOLED at $999.99. Rival sport watches cost less: Apple Watch Ultra 2 at $799, Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra at $649, COROS Vertix 2S at $699 and Polar Grit X 2 Pro at $749. The previous-generation Fenix 7X Pro Solar was about $300 less with similar capabilities.
Which model this is
This page covers the fēnix 8 Solar 51mm, part number 010-02907-10, the largest case in the Solar line, sold with a DLC titanium bezel and a black/pebble gray silicone band. The listing for this page is ASIN B0DD5PNZ8J.
Do not confuse it with the Fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm, which drops solar for a 454 x 454 screen, the Fenix 8 Pro with its inReach and MicroLED options, or the older Fenix 7 and Epix Pro models. The Solar line comes only in 47mm and 51mm, and steel is not offered in this size and display combination.
