Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A battery-powered 1600×1200 video doorbell that records to a microSD card in the bundled Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime with no subscription. Budget for the chime and a memory card, because the doorbell will not work on its own.

Strengths

  • Local recording on a microSD card with no required subscription.
  • 4:3 1600×1200 video framed head to toe, which suits a doorstep.
  • On-device human and face detection cuts animal and motion alerts.
  • A Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime is included, so no paid base station is mandatory.
  • Two-way audio with up to 3 pre-recorded instant responses.
  • WDR helps with difficult light at the door.

Weaknesses

  • The doorbell does not work on its own; the Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime is required.
  • The microSD card is not included, so the kit price is not the whole cost.
  • Consumer Reports rates the data security very weak.
  • No IP rating is published and there is no 3-second pre-buffer.
  • Battery life is a 120-day claim based on 20 events a day, and owners report a wide spread.
  • No package detection, no second camera and no family-member recognition.

Which model this is

eufy sells this battery doorbell under stock number T8222 and the ASIN B08FDKZKL6. Do not confuse it with the Video Doorbell 1080p (T8220), the eufyCam C210, the Smart Lock C210, the Indoor Cam C210 or the S220/S210. eufy markets the same hardware abroad as the Video Doorbell with Mini Repeater Chime, and in the US it also sells a doorbell-only C210 Add-on.

The chime and card are not optional

eufy states the C210 requires a HomeBase S280 or the Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime to operate, and that the doorbell alone will not work. Recordings are stored on a microSD card in that chime, and eufy repeats that the SD card must be bought separately. A buyer who budgets only the doorbell is short the chime and a card.

Video quality and data security

Consumer Reports has the exact C210 and calls daytime video fairly sharp and clear, though not as much as the better models, and night video very good: quite viewable, with a fair amount of brightness and clarity. It expects the C210 to perform similarly to the tested Video Doorbell 1080p (Battery-Powered), so some of that reading is inherited rather than measured on this unit. The same page rates data security very weak, saying the model lacks very many of the important protections for recordings and personal data, and rates privacy as only a mediocre level of control and transparency.

Battery life and owner reports

eufy’s 120-day figure assumes 20 detection events a day at 15 seconds each, a light load. Owner reports on the exact model go both ways: one r/EufyCam thread reports a C210 draining to around 27% right after two full charges, while another owner with a C210 in a sunless spot reports 40% left after 71 days, about 5 months on a charge. Two units, opposite ends. eufy also publishes a charging fix for units that never reach 100%, recommending a 5V/2A charger because an iPhone adapter outputs only 5V/1A.

Is it worth it?

The C210 makes sense if you want local, subscription-free recording at the entry of eufy’s battery range and accept Consumer Reports’ security finding. eufy lists the complete kit at $99.99 and Consumer Reports lists the model at $90.00; the doorbell-only Add-on is $69.99 and excludes the manual and mounting hardware. Above $130 there is little case for it: eufy’s own pages list the C31 with battery pack at $89.99 and the 2K E340 at $119.99, so paying more for the 1080p C210 buys less. Warranty is 12 months, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on eufy-direct purchases. The chime and Chime 2 are $39.99 each, and eufy’s optional Plus membership runs $15.00 a month if you want cloud backup.
