ELEGOO Neptune 4 Pro: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-05
Summary
The most repeated problem is firmware, not hardware: on the factory firmware the Z-offset does not survive a power cycle, and that shows up downstream as failed bed meshes and first layers. The hardware complaints that remain are unreliable mesh and inductive probe behaviour, extruder clogs, and a proprietary nozzle that one owner wore out in three weeks. Yearly running cost cannot be worked out from these sources because no nozzle, plate or filament prices were found, and under $250 the machine is a good buy only if you plan to spend a weekend replacing the firmware.
Common problems and fixes
- Z-offset does not persist across power cycles — the most repeated defect, appearing in six owner threads; one owner watched the value move from -0.470 to -0.390 to -0.250 across save-and-restart cycles against a measured true value near -0.500, and others report the machine forgetting the value at power-off. The community fix is to replace ELEGOO’s firmware with OpenNept4une or plain Klipper, a roughly two-hour job owners describe as not difficult, and it is the step to take before blaming hardware. No warranty length could be read from any source, so treat the firmware work as your own cost. [1] [2]
- Bed mesh and inductive probe unreliable — five owner threads; one owner replaced the entire printhead twice, the sensor still would not mesh, and ended up hand-writing the mesh into printer.cfg. Another reports the probe sits on the rear of the hotend and gets knocked sideways in the box. ELEGOO support is reported to replace printheads, but no warranty duration was confirmed, and the mesh failures themselves usually clear on the Klipper-based firmware. [1] [2] [6]
- Extruder clogs and filament wrapping the drive gears — five owner threads; owners name missing thermal paste between the heatbreak and the heatsink as the root cause, and report filament wrapping the BMG-S gears, with one extruder clogging before a quarter roll was used. Clearing one took a single owner about five hours of toolhead teardown. One owner had the extruder release lever replaced under warranty, which is an individual outcome rather than published policy. Adding the paste is the cheap prevention. [4] [5]
- First-layer adhesion failures and a damaged textured plate — five owner threads; one owner releveled roughly twenty times and reports the textured PEI sheet was destroyed in the process. Cleaning fixes owners use are Dawn dish soap diluted 1:95, IPA, Aquanet or a glue stick as a release layer. The plate is a consumable rather than a warranty item. [3] [6]
- Nozzle wear — three owner threads; one owner wore out the first nozzle in three weeks. There is no third-party drop-in equivalent, so replacements come from ELEGOO, and the closest substitute an owner tried, a Creality HF, measured 1 mm short and does not fit. [3] [7]
- Firmware installs that break the board — three owner threads report ELEGOO firmware and Mainsail installs failing with no clean eMMC dump to restore from. Do the OpenNept4une or Klipper swap early rather than after a failed install. Not a warranty matter. [3] [6]
- Touchscreen freezing during levelling and dropping the Moonraker link — two owner threads; the reported workaround is the Fluidd web interface, and both symptoms are reported as clearing on the Klipper-based firmware. [1]
- TPU that jams, skips or clicks — three owner threads; owners converge on a 2 mm Allen tension screw, about 30 mm/s, a 0.6 mm nozzle instead of the fitted 0.4 mm, 95% first-layer flow, a cold room and bed heat off. [8]
Parts and consumables
- Nozzle (0.4 mm, proprietary to the Neptune 4 family; no part number in the sources) — no price for this nozzle was found in the sources, so check the cost with ELEGOO before buying the printer. Replacement intervals are short: one owner wore out the first nozzle in three weeks. [3] [7]
- Textured PEI build plate (magnetic removable platform; no part number in the sources) — no price appears in the sources. One owner reports the plate destroyed after roughly twenty relevel attempts, so treat it as a consumable. [3]
- 1.75 mm filament — no brand lock-in, and the manufacturer-supported list is PLA, TPU, PETG, ABS, ASA and nylon. No filament price was found in the sources. [3] [6]
- Thermal paste for the heatbreak — owners name the missing paste between heatbreak and heatsink as the cause of recurring clogs, which makes this the cheapest fix to have on the bench from day one. No price in the sources. [4]
- Bed surface cleaner and release aid — Dawn dish soap diluted 1:95, IPA, Aquanet or glue stick, all reported by owners as adhesion fixes. No price in the sources. [3]
- UPS — recommended by owners because power-loss resume is unreliable on this machine; a battery backup is the owner-level answer. No price in the sources. [6]
- Alternative slicer — OrcaSlicer or Cura 5.4 in place of the bundled ELEGOO Cura, whose output is reported to break mid-print filament changes on a Klipper machine. Both are free downloads and the sources put no cost on them. [3]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a figure. Filament is the only required consumable and the sources give no price for it or for any other part, so no yearly total can be computed from this research. Electricity is the other missing half: the power supply is listed as 310 W by one outlet and rated power as 400 W by an aggregator, neither of which is a measured draw, and no electricity rate or usage figure was read. What the sources do establish is the shape of the spend: filament is routine, nozzles and textured PEI plates are occasional but can arrive within the first months, thermal paste and a UPS are one-off, and there is no subscription and no filament spool lock-in.
When it is a good buy
FilaScope’s tracker put a typical price at $244.50, a lowest tracked price of $229.00 and a best price of $260.00 in October 2026, while TechRadar cited $299.99 at Walmart in August 2023. Under $250 the machine is a strong buy if you accept the setup work. At $250 to $300 it stays defensible and matches the band both independent reviews were written against. Above $300 the value thins quickly, because that is where enclosed Bambu machines appear, and above $360 it is poor value for this configuration.
- ELEGOO Neptune 4 — the cheaper sibling. Choose it if you are comfortable tuning, since its only technical advantages over the Pro are the steel linear rollers plus linear rails and Klipper, and owners point to the plain Neptune 4’s larger community when comparing the two. [7]
- ELEGOO Neptune 4 Plus (320 x 320 x 385 mm) — owners report it running daily with almost no problems. Choose it when you want a larger build volume and fewer complaints than the Pro delivers, and note that the Pro and the Plus use different extruders even though they look the same. [6]
- An enclosed Bambu machine — owners who moved from this printer to a Bambu report that the Bambu machines need far less intervention. Choose one if you want an enclosure and fewer firmware decisions; you give up the open-frame simplicity and the lower cost of the Pro. [6]
