Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

An enclosed CoreXY 3D printer with a 256 mm cube build volume, a four-color CANVAS feeder, camera, filtration and automatic calibration, built for buyers who want multicolor printing without paying established-brand money. The print hardware reviews well; the catch is the CANVAS system itself, which owners report failing with slot errors, so check recent owner threads before you buy.

Strengths

  • Enclosed CoreXY hardware with a four-color feeder at a price that undercuts established multicolor systems.
  • Independent reviewers report strong print quality and good surface finish after firmware updates.
  • 350°C hotend and 110°C bed stretch the material range past PLA into ABS, ASA, PC and fiber-filled filaments.
  • Automatic calibration and usable presets make first prints easy.
  • Four external spool bays are easy to reach, unlike sealed multicolor boxes.
  • CANVAS reads RFID tags on ELEGOO filament and handles automatic refills and tangle detection.

Weaknesses

  • CANVAS maturity is the central risk: multiple owners report slot-specific load and unload errors in the 1243/1252/1263 family, sometimes after previously normal operation.
  • One shared nozzle means every color change purges waste; “instant switching” means automated, not zero-waste.
  • The purge chute can clog or fail to eject scraps, and one reviewer lost a print to it and now checks the chute before every job.
  • The software and cloud side is rougher than the hardware: owners report cloud errors and a Wi-Fi workflow that pushes you toward ELEGOO’s own slicer.
  • TPU cannot run through the four CANVAS slots; you need an adapter with the CANVAS disconnected.
  • Firmware changes have altered CANVAS behavior for some owners, so updates deserve caution.

Full research notes and sources

The base machine is the strong part of the package. Hands-on coverage describes sharp surfaces and consistent output after firmware updates, and GIGA’s reviewer was surprised by the quality for the class. The enclosure, 350°C hotend and 110°C bed make PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PC and fiber-filled materials officially usable, which cheap open-frame multicolor printers can’t claim. Two cautions: ELEGOO itself warns that abrasive fiber-filled filaments accelerate wear on the CANVAS feed parts and need regular inspection, and the sub-45 dB figure is a Silent Mode lab number with the cooling fan off, not everyday noise.

CANVAS multicolor

CANVAS swaps automatically among four spools, recognizes ELEGOO RFID filament, refills from a matching spare spool and detects tangles. It is still a single-nozzle system, so every swap purges filament into the chute, and the chute can clog. The recurring owner complaint is loading: threads on r/elegoo describe slot-specific errors 1243, 1252 and 1263, failed automatic spool changes and jams, sometimes on machines that printed fine before. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat CANVAS as a real feature with a real troubleshooting surface rather than a plug-and-play appliance.

Maintenance and upkeep

Keep the purge chute clear, inspect PTFE tubes and feed parts, and print an adapter for spools outside the 53–58 mm core range. ELEGOO ships the CANVAS as separate modules, so assembly takes longer than a single-color machine, and the thermal cover adds another part to seat correctly. Long-term reliability data doesn’t exist yet for this machine, and community complaints establish failure modes, not rates.

Is it worth it?

If you genuinely want multicolor, the Combo buys an unusual amount of enclosed hardware, and during sale periods its premium over the plain single-color Centauri Carbon 2 shrinks to a rounding error. If you mostly print one material, the plain machine is simpler and cheaper to own. Check the store panel above for current prices.

Which model this is

This page covers the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo: the Centauri Carbon 2 enclosed CoreXY printer plus the CANVAS four-color feeder, thermal cover and filament hub. The plain Centauri Carbon 2 without CANVAS is a separate, cheaper listing and the simpler machine for single-color printing. ELEGOO sells this family worldwide under matching product pages, and early units shipped with firmware that reviewers noted improved noticeably after updates.
