ELEGOO Centauri Carbon 2 Combo: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-05
Summary
The printer hardware reviews well, but the integrated CANVAS four-colour feeder is the main failure point: owners report slot-specific load and unload errors, failed automatic spool changes and jams. Purge waste is the dominant running cost, and on large multicolour jobs discarded filament can approach or exceed the filament in the finished print. Below $400 it is a strong buy; above $450 the case weakens.
Common problems and fixes
- CANVAS slot load and unload errors — owners report slot-specific errors 1243, 1252 and 1263, failed automatic spool changes and jams, sometimes after the machine had printed normally; workarounds include re-adding the machine in LAN mode and a firmware update, and the machine carries a 12-month warranty. [1][2][3]
- Purge waste on multicolour jobs — discarded filament can approach or exceed the filament in the finished part, one owner’s print sliced for 40 g of purge used 72 g, and no waste basin is included; purging is per layer, so batching small parts costs the same purge as one. [4][5][8]
- Purge chute clogs — the chute can clog or fail to eject scraps, and one reviewer lost a print to it and now checks the chute before every job; clear it manually before a long job. [4]
- Locked PTFE filament hub — the four PTFE tubes lock into the toolhead hub so tightly that PCMag and Tom’s Hardware could not extract them, so a clog means removing the whole manifold, and the printable removal tool does not work well. [6]
- Fixed 250 °C auto-load temperature — the load routine runs at 250 °C and does not clear PC, PA or PET residue when switching down, with no firmware option to change it; purge the old material manually. [6]
- Cloud, app and Wi-Fi connectivity — early owners reported the ELEGOO Matrix app failing to connect, Wi-Fi timeouts, and Orca or ELEGOO Slicer failing after an OTA update; deleting and re-adding the machine in LAN mode helped, and one owner says a firmware update fixed Matrix. [7]
- Spool holder limits and empty hubs — the holders take only 53-58 mm inner-diameter spools and need a printed adapter for wider cores, older Prusament spools would not mount and cardboard spools stuck, and without ELEGOO RFID filament the four hubs boot up empty and must be set by hand. [6][8]
- Cold-plate adhesion and no heated chamber — the cold plate is not sticky enough for high-temperature materials, PCMag needed glue stick and a brim for ASA, ABS-GF and PA6-CF, and the chamber stabilizes near 45 °C with no active heater. [4][6][8]
Parts and consumables
- Hardened-steel 350 °C nozzle kit — ELEGOO stocks it, but the warranty table lists the nozzle kit as a no-warranty or limited-warranty consumable; no price is published in the sources. [3]
- Dual-sided PEI build plate — listed as a no-warranty or limited-warranty consumable, and owners add glue stick and a brim for ASA, ABS and fibre-filled materials. [3][4]
- PTFE tubing and nozzle wiper assembly — stocked as separate consumables; ELEGOO recommends inspecting and replacing feed parts more often with abrasive fibre-filled filament. [3][8]
- Purge/flush filament — the dominant multicolour consumable, and the slicer underestimates it: one print sliced for 40 g of purge used 72 g. [5]
- Flexible Filament Adapter — required for TPU on the Combo, with the CANVAS cable disconnected. [6]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a yearly total. The dominant multicolour cost is purge filament: PCMag reports the discarded filament can approach or exceed the filament in the finished part, and one owner’s print sliced for 40 g of purge consumed 72 g. The other recurring costs are filament, glue stick, PEI plates, the hardened nozzle, PTFE tubing and wiper units, but the sources give no annual figure.
When it is a good buy
Below $400 it is hard to argue against on measured evidence, and at $400-450 it stays reasonable. Above $450 the case weakens because you reach machines with better chamber control and less purge waste. Non-store price points from the sources: ELEGOO EU listed the Combo at €399,00 reduced from €439,00 as of October 2026, and Tom’s Hardware’s deal module showed $369 at ELEGOO in February 2026.
- The Qidi Q2 at $499 is the better choice if you want a heated, more controlled chamber. [4]
- The Bambu Lab P2S at $749.99 is the better choice if a mature multicolour ecosystem matters more than price. [4]
- The plain Centauri Carbon 2 is cheaper and simpler if you print one colour and do not want CANVAS. [3]
