Summary

A corded 3-amp 5-inch random-orbit finishing sander with an 8,000–12,000 OPM speed dial and an eight-hole hook-and-loop pad, built for woodworking and refinishing. Check which package you are buying: the DWE6423 ships with the sander and a dust bag only, while the DWE6423K kit adds a carrying case.

Strengths

  • The 8,000–12,000 OPM dial lets you run gentler passes on softwood and painted trim.
  • A firsthand Tool Box Buzz review praised the low-vibration feel and comfortable low-profile grip.
  • That review found dust capture very effective with an attached shop vacuum.
  • Eight-hole abrasives and a genuine OEM replacement pad are widely available.
  • The dust port works with DEWALT extractors or a third-party shop vacuum via the DWV9000 adapter.
  • Repair parts such as the pad, belt, dust bag, cord and switch are documented in a factory catalog.

Weaknesses

  • The 4.5-foot cord is short enough to need an extension in most shops.
  • Backing pads are a recurring weak point, from stripped screw holes to a raised center.
  • The included cloth dust bag is small and makes no HEPA filtration claim.
  • The DWE6423 package does not include the carrying case that comes with the K kit.
  • The shared manual says not to use this sander on drywall.
  • A 5-inch round pad cannot reach sharp inside corners, so detail work still needs another tool.

Which model this is

This page covers the DWE6423, the bare corded variable-speed 5-inch sander with one dust bag and no case. The DWE6423K is the same machine sold as a kit with a carrying case. The DWE6421 is single-speed at a fixed 12,000 OPM, and the DWE6420 uses pressure-sensitive adhesive discs instead of hook-and-loop. Both DWE6423 and DWE6423K units exist in Type 1 and Type 2 production revisions, so check the nameplate and the matching service diagram before ordering internal parts.

Sanding performance and speed

The 3-amp brushed motor drives an 8,000–12,000 OPM dial, and the 3/32-inch orbit is sized for finishing rather than fast stock removal. The manual says to guide the sander with light sweeping strokes under its own weight; pressing down reduces removal and finish quality and can overheat the machine. It also warns that a worn speed-control belt can make the pad spin abnormally fast off the surface, which is a separate fault from the eccentric pad motion you see when the tool is unloaded. The manual explicitly says this sander is not for drywall. The independent 2015 Tool Box Buzz review of the mechanically related DWE6423K was positive on vibration and handling but criticized the short cord; it did not run a controlled vibration or durability test.

Dust collection and pads

Out of the box the DWE6423 uses a one-handed twist-lock cloth dust bag with no HEPA claim, so empty it often. For larger jobs the port accepts DEWALT DWV010 or DWV012 extractors directly, and a DWV9000 connector lets it hook to a 1-1/4-inch hose from another brand; that adapter is not in the box. The genuine replacement pad, DWE64233, fits both DWE6423 and DWE6421 and lists at $20.97 on Home Depot’s product page, with category snapshots showing $22.97; it carries its own 90-day limited warranty and is held on by four screws you can remove after unplugging. Abrasives are the routine consumable: a 50-pack of DIABLO 120-grit discs is $22.97 at Home Depot, about $0.46 per disc, and a POWERTEC 50-pack is $16.90, about $0.34 per disc.

Parts, repairs and running costs

There is no subscription or battery cost. The main recurring spend is 5-inch hook-and-loop discs: at $22.97 for 50, 100 discs a year run about $45.94, and 25 discs about $11.49. A replacement OEM pad at $20.97 is roughly 21% of a $99 tool, though owners report some pads lasting years and others failing within a single job. Repair parts documented for the DWE6423K Type 1 include the belt N430442 at $7.73, the base-plate assembly N329079 at $44.63, the dust bag N273733 at $11.94, the switch 656494-00 and brush-box N292059 at $6.40 each, and the cord N389354 at $19.14 with strain relief 330005-01 at $10.56, all listed by PartSelect. Verify the Type number first. Electricity is minor: 250 W for 40 hours a year is 10 kWh, about $2.50 at an assumed $0.25/kWh, though that is a scenario rather than a measured draw and excludes the shop vacuum.

Is it worth it?

US retailers listed the DWE6423 at $99 in October 2026, including Home Depot (item 311528803), Lowe’s (item 1631793), Acme Tools, The Power Tool Store and Ace Tool. Acme’s exact product page also showed a $79 “see price in cart” offer against $99, but that is a conflicting indexed promotion, so confirm the cart before counting on it. The DWE6423K with a carrying case runs about $119, a $20 premium for storage. At $70–80 a new authorized DWE6423 is a strong buy if that Acme cart price holds; $81–95 is reasonable; $96–105 is ordinary full price. Above $110, weigh the DWE6423K at $119 or the Bosch ROS20VSC at $105. The single-speed DWE6421 is $79.99, and the variable-speed SKIL SR211601 is $39.98 at Lowe’s or $37.99 direct if budget matters more than a 3-amp motor.
