Summary

A bare-tool 7-1/4-inch circular saw that DeWalt rates as its most powerful 20V MAX model, aimed at people already on the 20V battery platform. Budget for a battery and charger, because neither is in the box.

Strengths

  • Cutting power tested close to a 15-amp corded saw on pine, pressure-treated bevels and an OSB rip.
  • Electronic brake brings the blade to a stop in about half a second.
  • 57° bevel with detents at 22.5° and 45° covers the common framing cuts.
  • Lighter and shorter than the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2834, at 8.3 lb bare and 12.3 in. long.
  • Generous handle spacing and a comfortable front pommel grip in Pro Tool Reviews’ hands-on testing.
  • Runs on the DeWalt 20V MAX platform, and an XR PowerPack battery lets it pull more power than a standard pack.

Weaknesses

  • The uncoated stamped-aluminum shoe drags more than coated magnesium shoes, most obvious on long rip cuts.
  • Sightline is more obstructed than Milwaukee’s when following the blade from the left at 90°.
  • The lower guard can hang up on compound miter cuts, though that is a rare cut for most users.
  • Depth-of-cut markings are stamped and hard to read once covered in sawdust.
  • Bare plastic front pommel grip, with texturing only on the underside.
  • Battery and charger are not included, and DeWalt’s 368-cuts figure is tied to a separately sold DCB2108 battery.

Power and runtime claims

DeWalt rates the DCS590B at up to 1,700 MWO and 5,500 RPM no-load and calls it its most powerful 20V MAX circular saw. The “up to 368 cuts per charge” line is footnoted to a 2x6 SPF cut with a DCB2108 battery, which is sold separately, so it is not a general runtime figure. Pro Tool Reviews scored the saw 9.1 out of 10 and found the power close to a 15-amp corded saw: 2x4 pine studs cut without hesitation, 45° bevels in 2x10 pressure-treated pine with ease, and a 4 ft rip in 3/4 in. OSB faster than the reviewer could push it.

Shoe, sightline and guard

The recurring complaint is the base plate. Pro Tool Reviews describes an unpolished stamped-aluminum shoe without the glide coating found on some competing magnesium shoes, and calls the extra friction clearly noticeable during 4 ft rip cuts. The left-side view of the blade at 90° is more obstructed than on the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2834, where the reviewer recommends standing further back. In the same head-to-head the lower guard hung up during a compound miter cut in a 2x10, which Pro Tool Reviews put down to the guard catching the board rather than a power problem. The guard lifted smoothly in the normal cuts tested, so treat hang-ups as a rare-cut annoyance. The front pommel grip is bare plastic with texturing only underneath.

Which model this is

This page covers the DCS590B, the bare-tool version of DeWalt’s 20V MAX XR brushless 7-1/4 in. circular saw; the kit version is DCS590WW1, which adds an 8 Ah DCB2108 battery, a charger, a 24T blade and a blade wrench. The blade sits to the right of the motor, matching DeWalt’s other sidewinder saws. Don’t confuse it with the 60V FlexVolt DCS578B, the worm-drive DCS577B, the 6-1/2 in. DCS565B or the compact 4-1/2 in. DCS571B. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0DDDW9GWK.

Maintenance, repairs and warranty

Routine upkeep is light. DeWalt says to blow dust from the vents with dry air at least once a week, clean the lower guard path whenever it does not close freely, and change the blade when the saw gets hard to push or the motor strains. The base plate can be re-squared with an underside set screw, so out-of-square cuts after heavy use are a maintenance item rather than a defect. Repairs, brush inspection and adjustment route to a factory or authorized service center. The warranty is a three-year limited warranty plus a one-year free service contract and a 90-day money-back guarantee, and it applies only when the tool is bought from DeWalt or an authorized seller. No DCS590B recall was listed on DeWalt’s safety-notices page.

Is it worth it?

For someone already on the DeWalt 20V MAX platform, the DCS590B is the top non-FlexVolt option, and the reason to pick it over the cheaper DCS574 is the extra power it pulls from an XR PowerPack battery. Pro Tool Reviews listed it at $249 for the bare tool and $349 for the kit (February 2025). Against the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2834, the same testing gave Milwaukee the edge on cutting power, compound cuts, sightline, guard action, shoe friction and a five-year warranty, while the DCS590 won on weight, size, ergonomics and price. If you do not already own DeWalt batteries, remember that a battery and charger are extra, and the dust port and Tool Connect chip are separate purchases too.
