Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A two-spool heated dry box that holds two 1 kg rolls at 45–70°C, with a 4-inch touchscreen, 12 material presets and feed-through paths for printing while the lid stays closed. Check the fan and the PTFE routing before you buy: owners report blower noise and E4 heater shutdowns, and the supplied feed tube can creep inward and bind a spool.

Strengths

  • Two 1 kg spools dry together at a single shared temperature setting.
  • An independent test nearly eliminated stringing after about eight hours, and an eight-hour TPU dry printed cleanly.
  • Twelve presets cover common and engineering filaments.
  • The touchscreen shows chamber temperature and humidity and keeps settings after power-off.
  • Feed-through paths let you print while the lid stays closed.
  • Simple setup with no subscription or proprietary cartridge.

Weaknesses

  • The humidity reading is chamber air, not moisture inside the spool.
  • The supplied PTFE tube can creep inward and bind a spinning roll during print-through.
  • Owners report whirring or noisy blowers and at least one failed sleeve-bearing fan.
  • Several owners report E4 heating shutdowns, sometimes within minutes or weeks of use.
  • Some owners say the indicated temperature runs 15–20°F high.
  • The front screen assembly is adhesive-bonded and hard to service.

Drying performance

GamingTrend dried a previously stringing spool for about eight hours, reran the same print file without a change, and found the stringing nearly gone; a separate eight-hour TPU dry printed cleanly. The chamber humidity number is air, not filament moisture, so a low reading can appear quickly while a wet spool still needs the full recommended drying time, and ambient humidity or venting can keep it high. The 70°C ceiling suits PLA, PETG, TPU and common blends; for nylon or polycarbonate whose supplier asks for more heat, confirm the spool’s own range. Both spools share one temperature, so dry PETG and PLA together only when their approved ranges overlap.

Feeding while printing

Printing straight from the dryer is where the design shows a flaw. In GamingTrend’s test the supplied PTFE tube slid inward over time until it bound the spool and ruined the print; tape or hot glue can hold it, but that is a workaround, not a Creality fix. An exact-model owner separately reported high roller and feed tension and poor prints when feeding from the box. Secure and check the tube, and test free spool rotation before long unattended runs.

Fan and heating issues

Owner reports point to two recurring problems. Multiple exact-model owners describe new whirring or noisy blowers after weeks or months; one replaced a failed sleeve-bearing blower, and others struggled to source an exact replacement, with proposed aftermarket fans such as a Delta BFB0612H or a 5015 blower being owner experiments rather than confirmed OEM parts. Separately, several owners report an E4 heating shutdown, including one about 20 minutes into a cycle that began roughly two weeks into regular use, and a cold-garage report after 10–12 minutes; the cause is not established. A heating error is a fault: stop the cycle and contact the seller rather than running it unattended. Some owners also report the display reads 15–20°F high. These are caution signals, not a failure rate.

Repairs and upkeep

Routine ownership is light: keep the chamber and rollers clean, refresh optional desiccant, and inspect noisy fans or feed drag. Serviceability is weak. An owner whose touchscreen and electronics failed around 14 months after purchase found the front acrylic and screen assembly adhesive-bonded and difficult to open, and Creality offered a replacement part at $7.50 plus $30 shipping after the warranty expired (Creality, 2026). No model-specific service manual or official US spare-parts list was found. Electricity is the main running cost: at the 160 W rating an eight-hour full-power cycle is about 1.28 kWh, roughly $0.26 at an assumed $0.20/kWh, with real thermostatic use lower. A replacement 1 m Creality low-resistance star-shaped PTFE tube is listed at $11.58 (Creality US store, 2026), and only when the tube is worn, kinked or slipping.

Is it worth it?

At $70 or less a functioning, returnable unit is a strong two-spool bargain; $71–80 is good, and $81–95 is fair if you specifically want two-roll capacity. Above $96, compare newer dual-spool dryers: Sovol’s SH02 costs $59.99 with two spools, a 40–70°C range and a 150 W rating (Sovol US store, 2026), and SUNLU’s FilaDryer SP2 is listed from $69.99 (SUNLU store, 2026). The Plus itself is available from SainSmart and B&H at about $89.99–$95.99 (2026), Abt lists the exact 4005010074 at $95.99 (2026), and Creality’s own older VIP listing shows $104.25, sold out (2026). If printing from the dryer is the main draw, secure the PTFE routing and watch for fan noise or E4 errors while the return window is still open.

Which model this is

This page covers the original two-spool Creality Space Pi Filament Dryer Plus, US item 4005010074, UPC 6971636402961. It is not the single-spool Space Pi, the newer Space Pi V2 Plus, or the four-spool X4/X4L. Creality’s own listing groups it under “Space Pi (Plus)”, and international listings may carry different part numbers such as 4005010071, so match the US item number before buying. The Amazon listing for this hardware is ASIN B0CX4R8M9T.
