Summary

A mains-powered HEPA air purifier for one medium room, with a washable pre-filter, a replaceable carbon/deodorization sheet and an optional ionizer you can leave off. Check your noise tolerance before you buy: the high speed measures 59.5 dB, and the advertised 1,748-sq-ft coverage means one air change per hour, not the 4.8 ACH you get at 361 sq ft.

Strengths

  • ENERGY STAR’s exact-model certification confirms high clean-air delivery for a roughly 361-sq-ft room.
  • TechGearLab’s smoke test removed essentially all measurable particulates over one hour.
  • Eco mode stops the fan after 30 minutes of clean readings and restarts when pollution returns.
  • Physical controls need no account, app, cloud or firmware ecosystem.
  • The filter set is shared with the Coway Mighty AP-1512HH, reducing long-term compatibility risk.
  • One owner reported a successful warranty replacement about one week after a no-power failure at 6–7 months.

Weaknesses

  • TechGearLab measured 59.5 dB on high, too loud for noise-sensitive sleepers.
  • The thin carbon sheet is not a high-mass gas adsorber; odors lingered after 60 minutes in the smoke test.
  • One owner reported total no-power failure after 6–7 months.
  • A 2024 owner returned the unit after an initial chemical/plastic smell; another said the odor faded after ventilation.
  • No Wi-Fi, app, scheduling beyond 1/4/8-hour shutdown, or PM2.5 readout.
  • Auto mode can miss gas-only pollution because the particle sensor does not measure odors or VOCs.

Filtration and performance

Coway’s 200M uses a washable mesh pre-filter, a thin carbon/deodorization sheet and a True HEPA filter. The HEPA media catches particles, but it is not a whole-room efficiency claim or a VOC guarantee. In TechGearLab’s exact-model test, the unit removed essentially all measurable smoke particulates over one hour, though odors lingered. The carbon sheet is thin and not a high-mass gas adsorber, so if you are buying primarily for smoke or cooking smells, this is the weak point. The ionizer is optional and switchable; Coway’s own filtration page and the EPA certification allow you to leave it off. If you do use it, the EPA test lists 1 ppb ozone.

Auto mode adjusts fan speed from the particle sensor, and Eco mode stops the fan after 30 minutes of clean readings and restarts when pollution is detected. The sensor does not measure odors or VOCs directly, so Auto mode can miss gas-only pollution like cooking fumes or a spilled cleaning product. Coway instructs cleaning the sensor every two months and adjusting sensitivity when readings appear persistently wrong.

Noise

Coway rates the 200M at 24.4–55.1 dB(A). TechGearLab measured 59.5 dB on high and 40 dB on medium. Its reported 10-dB low-speed figure is unusually low and should not be treated as guaranteed room noise. Loud full-speed operation makes overnight high-ACH purification difficult for noise-sensitive sleepers, and quiet low speed does not provide the same CADR. If you need a quiet machine for a bedroom, this is the trade-off.

Filters and running costs

The pre-filter washes or vacuums clean every 2–4 weeks and needs no annual purchase. Replace the carbon/deodorization sheet every 6 months and the HEPA filter every 12 months. Do not wash the HEPA or carbon. A genuine Coway filter set (one HEPA, two carbon sheets) costs $59.79 (Coway US, October 2026). Walmart sells a genuine Fresh Starter set for $54.99. At that schedule, plan on $59.79 a year for the Coway filter set, or $54.99 with Walmart’s genuine kit.

ENERGY STAR’s exact AP-1518R certification reports 463.93 kWh/year under its standardized assumptions. At an assumed $0.20/kWh, that is $92.79 in electricity and $152.58 including Coway-direct filters annually. A hypothetical 24/7 upper-power scenario (82 W × 24 × 365) is $143.66 in electricity and $203.45 with filters. A 12h/day scenario at 82 W is $71.83 in electricity and $131.62 with filters. These are modeled maximum-draw scenarios, not actual variable-speed consumption. TechGearLab published a $3.01/year electricity example based on a very low watt-meter reading, but its protocol cannot be generalized to every owner.

Is it worth it?

Coway US lists the 200M at $229.99, and Walmart has the white model at $229.99. Dwell’s catalog showed $183.99 in a mid-2026 crawl. Owners reported paying $98, $108 and $46 at Walmart clearance in March-April 2025, but those were one-off local deals, not national pricing. Against new-unit prices, the Winix 5510 is $199.99 with Wi-Fi and a more substantial carbon stage, and the Levoit Vital 200S-P is $169.99 with app controls and a two-year warranty. The 200M’s value is strongest if you want physical controls, no app and ENERGY STAR-certified particle delivery, and weakest if you need smart features or heavy odor control.

Which model this is

This page covers the Coway Airmega 200M, model AP-1518R, in white. It is not the Airmega 150, which is smaller and uses a different replacement filter.
