Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1500 W brushed-stainless variable-temperature kettle with a 1.8 L body, five fixed presets and a 20-minute keep-warm. It is strongest for tea and French press: independent testing measured the 200 °F preset landing nearly 5 °F cool with no way to trim it, so pour-over buyers should look elsewhere.

Strengths

  • TechGearLab measured 0.6 °F average accuracy at the 175 °F tea preset, with a best reading 0.1 °F off.
  • 500 mL reached a rolling boil in 2 minutes 55 seconds on the 1500 W element.
  • Preset buttons sit on the base and are labelled with both a temperature and a drink.
  • Keep-warm can be armed before, during or after the heating cycle.
  • Wirecutter’s test-kitchen unit has run since 2022 without issues.
  • Owners praise the stainless interior taste and presets that match each tea type.

Weaknesses

  • Five fixed presets are the only temperature choices; there is no way to adjust by degrees.
  • The 200 °F coffee preset averaged nearly 5 °F below target in testing.
  • Precision pouring scored 3.0 out of 10 because the pitcher spout stream breaks up.
  • One test unit’s lid release engaged on the first press only about 30% of the time.
  • Plastic touches the water in the level window and in an interior part the maker does not disclose.
  • The warranty is one year, and it is void on purchases from unauthorized sellers.

What the five presets mean

Five buttons are the whole control scheme: 175 for green and white tea, 185 for oolong, 195 for French press, 200 for black and herbal, and 212 for a full boil. There is no dial and no way to pick a temperature between them. At the 175 °F tea preset TechGearLab measured an average of just 0.6 °F off target, with a best single reading 0.1 °F off, which supports the kettle’s reputation with green, white and oolong drinkers. Coffee is the weak spot: at the 200 °F preset the same test averaged nearly 5 °F below target, and the next stop up is a full boil, so there is no way to nudge the water warmer. Owner readings disagree with the lab. One verified Zappos buyer checked each setting against a digital thermometer and reported being within 1 °F at each setting; another Zappos owner reported the opposite, saying their unit ran 5–10 °F hotter than the buttons said, which made the higher settings boil. Different units and different methods, so don’t treat any one reading as the model’s true accuracy.

Pouring, handling and the lid

For tea, French press and filling a large pot, the presets and the 1.8 L body do the job, and boiling is quick for the capacity. Pour-over is the wrong use. TechGearLab scored precision pouring 3.0 out of 10 and ease of use 5.0 out of 10, and found the rounded pitcher spout let the stream lose cohesion and break into larger drops a few inches below the outlet; Wirecutter likewise steers pour-over buyers to a gooseneck. On the test unit, the lid-release button worked on the first press only about 30% of the time, which the tester suspected was a cost of the soft-opening mechanism; the same feature was praised on Wirecutter’s unit, so treat it as unit-to-unit variation rather than a model fault. The handle is thick, and TechGearLab found that a full lift concentrates the weight between thumb and index finger, which smaller hands may notice. Owners like that the jug can be set down on its base in any direction.

Materials, warranty and ownership costs

The “brushed stainless” headline is only part of the wetted path: TechGearLab documents a BPA-free plastic water-level window, a plastic strip below the spout and a non-removable black plastic interior part, none of which the maker’s specification field mentions. The exterior handle is silver plastic brushed to match, not solid metal. Buyers avoiding plastic entirely should choose an all-steel model. The warranty runs one year, and Breville’s own warranty page prints no kettle duration at all and points buyers to the product page; the one-year figure comes from the dealer spec sheet and is corroborated by Wirecutter. Breville’s terms void coverage on units not bought from Breville or an authorized distributor or reseller, explicitly including unauthorized online and auction sellers, and exclude wear, corrosion and cosmetic damage. Repairs or replacements carry the balance of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer, with a prepaid shipping label and up to 10 business days’ turnaround.

Repairs, upkeep and running costs

There are no consumables, pods or proprietary cartridges, and no filter or element is documented as a user-replaceable part. Upkeep is descaling, which depends on water hardness; Wirecutter’s general method is one cup white vinegar plus three cups water, brought to a boil, then left overnight, followed by three water-only boil-and-drain cycles. Whether this model ships with a removable mesh filter is unclear: AJ Madison’s feature grid lists a removable filter basket, TechGearLab lists no filter, and Breville’s page is silent. Durability evidence is thin. Wirecutter’s long-term note reports continuous test-kitchen use since 2022 with no issues, and Wirecutter cautions that pricier kettles do not have more durable electronics, based on teardown work with Ohio State University’s metallurgy department. One Reddit owner reported a heating element that failed after about four years of daily use, but that owner specified the glass variant of the IQ, so it is not clean evidence for this model. A single 2011 retailer review reported the unit giving its owner an electric shock and then behaving erratically; one report is not a rate, and nothing else read corroborates it.

Is it worth it?

This is a roughly $180 kettle: Breville US lists it at $179.95, and Sur La Table, Best Buy and Abt Electronics all showed $179.95 (2026-10-04). At that price you are paying for a large, well-built, well-tested pitcher body with an open handle and a soft-open lid, not for measured accuracy, pour control or warranty length. Wirecutter, which has recommended a cheaper Cuisinart since 2013, says the IQ’s features are not enough to unseat that pick given the price and the shorter warranty. The model’s price can break hard, but the one clear example is a 2019 report of $51.99 on a random Best Buy sale, too old to plan around. Buy it for tea, French press or volume boiling; skip it for pour-over or if you want degree-level control.

Which model this is

This page covers the Breville the IQ Kettle, model BKE820XL, in brushed stainless steel; the listing is ASIN B001DYERBK. Do not fold in the glass-bodied “IQ Kettle Pure” or the “Variable Temp Luxe”: owners describe them as different machines, and the durability and taste reports that mention a mostly-glass body are not evidence about this model. The brushed-stainless version has been sold since at least 2009.
