Summary
A compact Wi-Fi air purifier for medium rooms, with AHAM Verifide CADR of 365 cfm pollen, 314 cfm dust and 283 cfm smoke, app control and a 3-year warranty once registered. Check the filter before you buy: it is HEPASilent dual filtration, not true-HEPA-only, and replacements last up to 9 months.
Strengths
- AHAM Verifide CADR puts it on a par with Wirecutter’s top picks in its tested configuration.
- PCMag measured PM2.5 falling from 200 to 0 in 14 minutes in a 110 ft² room.
- Quiet low end: 23 dB on Night, and PCMag measured 33 dB on low.
- App and voice control with schedules, geofencing and filter-life tracking.
- Compact footprint and a 3-year warranty once registered.
- Energy Star rated with a 32 W maximum draw.
Weaknesses
- The filter is HEPASilent, not true-HEPA-only; Wirecutter says this trades a little single-pass efficiency for airflow.
- Filter life runs up to 9 months, shorter than the year many rivals get.
- Controls are minimalist: two buttons with combination hold-and-taps.
- The display shuts off only on the lowest fan setting, which can bother light sleepers.
- Air-quality sensing covers PM2.5 only, with no PM10, NO2 or VOC readings.
- No Apple HomeKit or IFTTT support.

Filtration and what the numbers mean
Blueair uses HEPASilent dual filtration, a mechanical filter plus an electrostatic charge, rather than a true-HEPA-only design. The company says the filter removes 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 micron, but that figure is tested on PM2.5 over up to 90 minutes, not as a single-pass HEPA rating. Wirecutter notes that Blueair, like Dyson, uses slightly less efficient filters that trade a bit of single-pass performance for lower airflow resistance, so the purifier can move more air and use less energy and make less noise.
The CADR numbers are the ones to compare: 365 cfm for pollen, 314 cfm for dust and 283 cfm for smoke, AHAM Verifide. Blueair rates the unit for rooms up to 439 ft² on a 4 ACH basis, and the bigger 1,054 ft² and 2,107 ft² figures are its 30-minute and 1-hour cleaning claims, not the recommended room size.
Cleaning speed and noise
PCMag ran the 311i Max in Auto mode in a 110 ft² office with incense smoke and saw PM2.5 fall from 200 to 55 in 3 minutes, 20 in 6 minutes, 4 in 10 minutes and 0 in 14 minutes, comparable to other mid-range purifiers it tested. Its noise measured 33 dB on low and 52 dB on high; Blueair rates the unit at 23 dB on Night and 50 dB on high. Wirecutter, which previously recommended the model, found it performs on a par with its top-pick Coway units in air-cleaning ability, and that it is energy efficient and attractive.
Filters and running costs
One combined particle-and-carbon filter does the work. Blueair lists replacement filters at $44.99 for Particle & Carbon, $59.99 for SmokeBlock (double carbon) and $64.99 for AllergenBlock, and a subscription cuts 15-25% (Blueair, 2026). The filter lasts up to 9 months depending on use, and the app’s RealTrack tracking adjusts the estimate to how dirty your air actually is. The fabric pre-filter is washable, and extra pre-filters in Sand, Moss or Limestone are $10.99 each (Blueair, 2026). The unit draws 32 W at most, so electricity is a minor cost.
The app and air-quality data
The app adds schedules, geofencing, child lock, LED brightness control and filter status, and the purifier works with Alexa and Google Assistant. The on-unit ring shows air quality as one of 5 colors, while the numeric PM2.5 reading and history need the app. There is no PM10, NO2 or VOC sensing, and no Apple HomeKit or IFTTT support. The physical controls are two buttons with combination holds and taps, which Wirecutter flagged as fiddly.
Is it worth it?
Blueair lists the 311i Max at $229.99 direct (Blueair, 2026), and PCMag reviewed it at $168.99 (PCMag, 2023). Value is strongest at or below that MSRP and compelling below roughly $160; above roughly $250 the larger Blue Pure 211i Max, at about $257-349 as a Wirecutter upgrade pick, buys substantially more coverage per dollar for bigger rooms (Wirecutter, 2026). The main trade-offs are the shorter filter life, the minimalist controls and the PM2.5-only sensing. The 3-year warranty with registration and generally positive manufacturer-collected owner experiences help offset the thin long-term reliability data.
