Summary
Apple’s smallest tablet, an 8.3-inch, 293-gram iPad built for one-handed use, with the A17 Pro chip, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of base storage. Check the battery numbers before you buy: Apple claims 10 hours, but independent tests and owners report considerably less.
Strengths
- At 293 g it is genuinely one-handed and slips into a jacket pocket.
- 128GB base storage is double the previous generation for the same $499 launch price.
- Apple Pencil Pro brings squeeze, barrel roll, hover and haptics for artists and note-takers.
- A17 Pro and 8GB of RAM handle browsing, media and gaming, and enable Apple Intelligence.
- Wi-Fi 6E and USB-C at 10Gb/s are real upgrades over the older mini.
- Jelly scrolling is much less noticeable than on the iPad mini 6.
Weaknesses
- Battery life falls well short of Apple’s claim for some owners, who report 3-5 hours of screen-on time.
- The 60Hz LCD has no ProMotion and looks dated next to 90-120Hz rivals.
- The front camera sits on the short edge, so landscape video calls are off-center.
- No Apple Pencil 2 support: upgrading owners must buy the $129 Pencil Pro or the $79 USB-C Pencil.
- No M-series chip means no Stage Manager and only screen mirroring on an external display.
- Repairability is poor, an iFixit score of 3/10, because of heavy adhesive.

Battery life
Apple rates the 19.3-Wh battery at up to 10 hours of web or video on Wi-Fi. Independent results differ widely: Tom’s Guide measured 10h34m, PCMag got 7h23m streaming video at maximum brightness, and PhoneArena estimated 5h28m under heavy use. Owners in r/ipadmini report 3-5 hours of screen-on time and rapid drain after iPadOS updates, and Apple Community threads describe severe drain after one such update. Treat Apple’s 10-hour figure as a best-case lab result.
The display and jelly scrolling
The 8.3-inch Liquid Retina panel is sharp at 326 ppi and color-accurate, but it stays a 60Hz LCD with no ProMotion or OLED. The jelly-scrolling artifact from the iPad mini 6 still divides reviewers: The Verge says it is still very much present, Stuff says it does not look as bad, and WIRED and some MacRumors owners could not see it at all. Apple has never explained what changed, so treat this as something to check in person rather than a spec you can trust.
Repairs, warranty and running costs
iFixit gave the iPad mini 7 a provisional repairability score of 3/10, citing heavy adhesive and difficult display and battery replacement. Apple added the model to its Self Service Repair program in May 2025 and publishes an official repair manual. Warranty runs one year, and AppleCare+ costs $69.99 for two years, covering screen-only damage for $29 and other accidental damage for $99. No subscription is needed for core use. Accessories are separate: Apple Pencil Pro $129, Apple Pencil USB-C $79 and Smart Folio $59.
Is it worth it?
The iPad mini’s case rests almost entirely on its size. Tom’s Guide named it an Editor’s Choice, while The Verge called it potentially the worst value in the iPad lineup at $499, because larger iPads cost the same or less. Street discounts help: The Verge reported it at $449 at Best Buy in May 2025, and Apple’s own refurbished store listed the 128GB Wi-Fi model at $509 in October 2026. If 8.3 inches is not a hard requirement, look at the bigger models first.
