Summary
A tiny, near-silent macOS desktop built around Apple’s first 2nm chip, aimed at first-time Mac buyers and anyone who wants an always-on machine. Check the base storage before you buy: the 256GB SSD in the entry configuration is soldered, non-upgradable and roughly half the speed of the 512GB models.
Strengths
- PCMag measured the M6 beating the pricier M5 Pro in single-core.
- Near-silent and cool: silent in single-core runs and only slightly warm under sustained load.
- Compact 5 by 5 by 2-inch aluminum chassis, unchanged from the 2024 M4 mini.
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7 in a tiny box.
- PCMag’s test unit beat Intel and AMD mini PCs that cost two to three times more.
- Hardware ray tracing and a 32-core Neural Engine for GPU and local AI work.
Weaknesses
- Base price rose to $899 from the $599 launch configuration of the 2024 M4 mini.
- The 256GB SSD is small and, with a single NAND chip, about half the speed of 512GB+ models.
- Memory and storage are soldered, so nothing can be upgraded after purchase.
- The M6 is capped at 2TB of storage and Thunderbolt 4, not Thunderbolt 5.
- No keyboard, mouse or display is in the box.
- The power button sits on the bottom, which is awkward with a Touch ID keyboard.

Performance and thermals
Ars Technica measured the M6 roughly 8-10% faster than the M5 in single-core, about 10% faster in graphics and about 20% faster in multi-core, and 50-80% faster than the M4 mini in graphics and multi-core; in Blender it nearly matched an M4 Pro. PCMag gave it a 4.0 “Excellent” and an Editors’ Choice among mini desktops, and its test unit beat Intel and AMD mini PCs costing far more while running cool. Under sustained multi-core load it was about as loud as a small space heater; it stayed silent in single-core runs and only slightly warm. Apple’s own claims are larger, up to 40% more CPU and up to 2x graphics over the M4, but those are marketing figures rather than independent measurements.
Storage and upgrades
The base 256GB SSD is the weak point. It uses a single NAND chip, so it runs at roughly half the speed of the 512GB configuration: measured Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results were 3,216.8 MB/s read and 3,000.2 MB/s write at 256GB, versus 6,371.5 MB/s read and 6,577.4 MB/s write at 512GB. Unlike the 2024 M4 mini, the NAND storage is soldered to the logic board and the firmware lives on the same chip, so a NAND failure could leave the machine unbootable. There is no removable storage and no user-upgradable memory. Reviewers advise adding the 512GB upgrade at checkout, which brings a sensible configuration to $1,099; memory steps are $200 for 24GB and $400 for 32GB. The 16GB model also runs at a lower 153GB/s memory bandwidth than the 170GB/s of the 24GB and 32GB models.
Price and value
Apple lists the base M6 configuration at $899, up from the $599 launch configuration of the 2024 M4 mini with a $799 floor in between; reviewers tie the increase to a memory-chip shortage. At that figure the 256GB storage is hard to recommend, so budget the extra $200 for 512GB. No monitor, keyboard or mouse is included, and first-time buyers may need to add peripherals: Apple sells a Magic Mouse for $79, a Magic Trackpad for $129, Magic Keyboards from $99 and Studio Display monitors from $1,599. WIRED notes a well-configured M6 mini lands only a couple hundred dollars below a comparable MacBook Air. The M6 is a strong machine for a silent, low-power macOS desktop, but it is no longer the budget Mac the M4 mini was; buyers who need more RAM, Thunderbolt 5 or heavier multi-core throughput should weigh the M5 Pro instead.
Warranty and repairs
Apple’s standard coverage is 90 days of telephone support and a one-year limited warranty. There are no user-serviceable parts, and with the NAND soldered the only storage expansion path is an external drive. The cooling fan draws air in from the front and pushes it out the back, so keep the base vents clear. No defect rate or hardware failure pattern was found in the sources checked, so treat the storage limits as a design trade-off rather than a reliability problem.
Which model this is
This page covers the 2026 Mac mini with the base M6 chip, 16GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD and a Silver finish. The US retail part number is MHQK4LL/A. The Amazon listing for this configuration is ASIN B0HGGJZ92H. Don’t merge it with the M5 Pro mini, the Mac Studio or the 2024 M4 mini, which had removable storage and is not equivalent for upgrades.
