Display and performance
Reviewers consistently call the display bright and sharp for the price. The MediaTek octa-core with 3GB of RAM posts modest numbers — PCMag measured 515 on Geekbench 5 single-core and 1,516 multi-core — and Android Police measured the chip at about 25% faster than the 2021 model. Tom’s Guide calls performance sufficient for streaming, browsing and casual gaming, not for demanding tasks, and every review notes stutters in demanding games and heavy multitasking.
Battery and charging
Amazon claims up to 13 hours, and the claim survives contact with testing: PCMag measured 10 hours 18 minutes of HD video streaming over Wi-Fi at full brightness, and Android Police measured about 12 hours. The claim is tied to specific usage conditions, so treat real-world results as variable. Charging is the weak point — the included 9W adapter needs about 4 hours for a full charge, and a 15W charger brings that to about 3 hours.
Apps and the ecosystem
The lack of Google Play is the trade-off at the center of this tablet. Apps come from the Amazon Appstore, and while sideloading is possible, Amazon does not support it. Fire OS 8 is a heavily forked Android 12, and nobody has tested how sideloaded Google Play apps perform on it, so treat that question as open. Wirecutter’s view is that Fire tablets work best as media-consumption devices with limited app selection. Echo Show mode is the counterweight: docked on a stand, the tablet doubles as a smart display.
Is it worth it?
It lists at $139.99 with lock screen ads and $154.99 without them, and frequent sales bring it below $100.
At $100 or less the trade-offs are easy to take: bright 1080p display, battery life that matches the claims, expandable storage and stylus support. Between $101 and $140 it still makes sense if you mainly watch, read and listen on it. Above $140 the value thins — Android Police notes that the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 and Lenovo Tab M10 offer full Android with Google Play at similar or slightly higher prices.
